In the golf swing, for a majority of your shots on the course and on the practice range, if you set up correctly, your spine will be tilted to the right or left depending upon if you are a leftie of rightie.

If you hit plenty of balls in practice and in general play a lot of golf (in fact I would recommend what comes in a bit to all golfers) then it can place pressure on the alignment of the spine. To recover from this you need give you spine plenty of rest i.e. having a break from golf so your spine re straightens- however we do not want this us golfaholics.

Henry Cotton recommends "Contra Exercises". These are basically swinging the opposite way. So if you are right handed, regularily swing left handed and vice versa (maybe after a round and especially after a practice session). This will hopefully prevent a deformed spine.

Incidentally, in his 1980 book, Sir Henry analysed Seve's youthful swing. He noted Seve's back problems that he was already suffering and that they could severely affect his career later. How right he was! What Seve recommended to Seve in his book (whether Seve took the advice I don't know) was plenty of Contras.

So do plenty of opposite swings to help your spine and back overall. It may also help your swing by experiencing a free-er swing on your other side that you can translate into your "natural" side.

I also saw this exercise recommended to a PGA pro on a BBC health show, who had back problems, and I think they worked for him.
