I play off a handicap of about six (and I'm a right-hander), though recently I've been having problems with my swing. Basically, I don't cock my wrists early enough. I get too much shoulder turn too early on, the clubhead goes too long on the target line (rather than going slightly in), and by the time my club shaft reaches horizontal, my shoulders have rotated too much. All this results in a plane that is too flat.
Now, while I could get too flat a plane for a number of reasons, I consider this a no-brainer. Simply by looking at my swing when I am where I'd be at the "top" of a backswing in a chip (clubhead arond 8-9 o'clock), I can see more shoulder rotation and less wrist cock than pros.
So, the problem is. How do I get the right wrist action naturally? It's not a problem without a club, but as soon as I put a club in my hand, I get problems..
I've considered my grip a problem; I suspect my left hand is too strong and right too weak, resulting in either total inactivity or overactivity of the wrists because the hands don't work so much as a unit. I experimented with a grip closer to my "natural" grip (when arms hanging down without a club), but I seem to lay off the club at the top and get a convex left wrist - I suppose the left hand is too weak then.
I reckon it could also have something to do with the pressure in my hands / wrists. I have a tendency towards over-relaxation or when gripping "harder", a dominant right hand. Both scenarios lead to delayed wrist cock.
Any thoughts as to what I should try?
