  • Shaft lean

I advocate it but wondered if many on this site have tried it and whether it works for you.

    Re: Shaft lean

When driving, lobbing or hitting from greenside bunkers then I do not want shaft lean, I want to maintain the clubs loft into impact.

When hitting penetrating shots then it is important that my hands lead the clubhead into impact so that I create good ball compression, the shaft must be ahead of the ball at impact in these shots. Another condition is with the punch shot where the ball needs to fly long and low.

Why do you want to "maintain loft into impact"?

        I agree with Brian.

Particularly with hitting my iron shots, I try to get my hands slightly in front of the golf ball at impact. This enables me to hit a solid, descending blow into the golf ball. You get the power and the spin on the golf ball.

Shaft lean delofts the club, when I play a lob shot then I decide the amount of loft needed to create the desired trajectory for the shot-in-hand, with the club laying almost vertical (this may require me to open the face to obtain enough loft) I then want to impact the ball with the exact amount of loft set at address, I will also keep the clubface looking up so that it does not change the effective loft. This will be exactly the same with bunker shots.

The driver it is designed so that the clubhead and hands should be level at impact so in this case I require no shaft lean.

I hope this clarifies for you.

              Re: Shaft lean

The longer the club, the less shaft lean that is recommended. Exceptions: punch shots, knock downs, stingers, long fairway bunkers.
Flop shots: I lay the face open, open my stance, lean the shaft back and take a full swing.
Normal bunker shots: lay the face open and either lean the shaft forward for more run or lean the shaft back for more bite.
Short chips: lean the shaft forward for run or lean it back a little for less run.
Normal iron shots: lean the shaft forward for crisp contact
Driver: shaft lines up with zipper
