I couldn't agree more with Gord. Being a pro teacher myself, it is very frustrating when pupils go away from a lesson, don't do the drills but do something else instead or even worse try to jump ahead of the plan!
It doesn't happen a lot but it does happen.
You know why he's getting you to 3/4 swings? He wants you to get used to the position so when you do a full swing that 3/4 position is repeatable ... time and time again. That's what the drill is for. Next time he needn't worry about you getting in the wrong position on the way back. There is no use swinging full length if you're all over the place.
Take school as an example. Say your teacher asks you to learn a chapter of a subject. But instead of really studying the chapter you read the chapter and the next ... you've done yourself no favours because you haven't learnt the foundation to enable you to learn the next chapter.
See how important it is.
