Re: hitting down on the ball...

Because there is so much confusion about hitting down - not knowing to and/or not knowing how to - I wrote a book entitled "Hit Down Dammit!"

The book did very well so we have now produced a DVD (4 DVDs actually) also called Hit Down Dammit! In the DVDs we explain everything from hitting down to the basic fundamentals, short game, and also offer drills.

If anyone has any questions about the Hit Down Dammit! DVDs please write me. You can see some sample clips either on YouTube or the Hit Down Dammit! website.

      Hi Writer,

I like your site very much, what you have done here is very similar to my following in teaching which is Three Skills Golf.

Skill one is to learn to hit down on the ball,

Skill two from inside the ball

Skill three is rotation of the hands and arms.

      www.3skillsgolf.com

Glad to have you on board at this site.

      Regards

      Ian.

Re: hitting down on the ball...

i would say the secret to hitting down is keeping the wrists loose and creating lag.take for example swinging a hammer and hitting a nail into the wall.as u take it back u keep ure wrists loose and as ure hand is moving forward again the hammer is still goin back and u feel the weight of the hammer and the wrists really loose.try this in the golf swing u have to keep the wrists loose, ,loose grip also ,just hit a few half shots and as u go back feel as if the hands start going forward before the club has finished goin back the hands have to win the race ,u will get a great strike and squueze the ball away, hope this helps

Re: hitting down on the ball...

Hitting down for me is best achieved by not trying to hit down....if the bottom of my swing is consistently in one spot and takes a divot, correct ball placement will create a downward strike naturally, and all I have to worry about is squaring the club. Trying to do anything on a plane that is not perpendicular to my sight line, is difficult and counter productive for me. The correct address with hands ahead of club head does more for me on these lines than trying to hit down on the ball during the swing.

There is also nothing like a good understanding of club construction and designer intent to "get your brain on board" as stated many times.

I read a good article recently relating hitting down on the ball. It suggested that you thought of hitting the balls equator with the top grooves of the club and also to use an image of using the clubface to put a lid on the back of the ball.

I think it's better to think of hitting into the back of the ball.

Re: hitting down on the ball...

theres a big difference between hitting trick shots off the tops of shafts and hitting the ball off the fairway

I was amazed, the ground for about 2 feet in diameter jumped into the air, dust, dirt, loose grass, broken tees, etc. the ball squeezed out and went straight to the green. i have tried it, but havnt got the hang of, i am afraid of damaging my irons.

Take a heavy iron and practice hitting down. Pretty logical really.

but were talking about iron shots here not off the top of shafts with a driver u sweep the ball with the driver irons are a different connection altogether

                      hi
i find with hitting down on the ball it more a feeling you get of doing that rather than really hitting down on the ball.
i find i play better looking at a point an inch in front of the ball and a couple of inches in front if using a driver. i find that I'm more focused on hitting through the ball no matter if playing a one iron or a nine iron.
i find if I focus on the back of the ball i do not get such a clean shot. the only time i try and hit down on the ball is if I'm playing a punch shot where i bury the club into the ground after i play the ball.
i think a lot of pros talk about hitting down but don't mean they try to do that but more the feeling of playing the ball first and the divet second.
                      cheers
                      bill

It shows a club hitting the back of the ball.
