Hei -
I am having the types of problems Greg is trying to fix - great irons on the driving range, can't hit the green on the course. What has been my "fix" the past week is working on two things: good turn away around spine (not "leaning right" on takeaway), and the clincher, which is really two parts: getting my right shoulder thru-the-ball on-plane (which feels like going down and under with my right shoulder). (2 parts being [1]thru the ball, and [2]in the plane). Accuracy has improved dramatically, but it feels like I'm exaggerating the down and thru shoulder motion.
I've been working on strengthening my snap, and may have gotten a tendency to "slap" as Greg says. (Sounds dead on, anyway, occasionally slapping a good shot the course). ANYWay, what I am trying to ask is this: Is this "shoulder-thru-the-ball-on-plane" fixing my swing because I'm can't "slap", or is this "shoulder-thru-the-ball-on-plane" just a good thing in itself? Thoughts? I'm thinking may be just two ways of looking at the same thing, since, if you don't "slap", then you Must get your shoulder thru the ball on plane to hit the ball. It's just that this shoulder thing feels a bit strange just yet...
So - keep "shoulder-thru-the-ball-on-plane" and work on maintaining lag? I do lose some distance now, and need a good weight shift to maintain power.
