I like this image too although I try and sense its a pull from 4pm to 10am. The one thing you must have done for this to work though is have good width in the swing. I went through a whole patch a while ago of blocking right when I did this because I didnt have enough width to allow the clubhead to square as it came down. I had lag but not enough width to release it, so the swing was too steep. For this to work the downswing needs to be shallower which relies on good width having been created at the top

Heres an article which I think explains this quite well

Yes, but I don't think too much about width as I was more narrow sometime back but got out of it and just got more natural which created more width and less mechanics.
I propose due to the many things we all must assume one does, that we make a list of things we do.

Remember: Backswing-clubhead starts and hands follow; Downswing-hands start(along with shoulders of course) and clubhead comes last.
This promotes the appearance of what you see Ernie Els do in slow rhythm and he looks so effortless doing it; watch any of his sequences and you will see his tremendous lag.
One more thing: When in doubt, take one more club; that way, you can swing easier-smoother-and create the lag; of course, lag does promote a little hooding of the clubface but watch any pro and they do exactly that.
I have played in many pro ams and the one thing all pro's tell me is Amateurs greatest fault is using too little club and relying on maximum swing speed. Even the pro's won't try this, so if they don't dare do it, none of us should either.
All of the above relies upon having a good release but I guarantee you, the release is alot easier using lag than hitting from the top.
I see what you mean but I think you have to add ithat this won't work with a tight grip. You must lose the tension in your hands and wrist so they hinge freely and are not so connected to the downswing of your shoulders and arms. If your wrists and grip are tight you won't get much lag.

See, this is why I propose we all make a list of what we do. I assume wrongly I guess that we keep our grips on a 4 or 5 out of 10 being the most but I assume wrong as some still grip the club like they are chocking their mother in law.
Loosen up, relax, drop those shoulders, let the club hang down with the arms, plant that left leg to pivot and let everything else stay loose, these are some of the things we all need to list as a compendium of things all great players do.
Thanks much and keep in touch.

am i doing the dagger drill wrong? as far as i can tell it is imposible to release if you are pulling back with the rightr and down with the left and you will still be lagging long after the club has past the ball and the club will be aout 6" above the ball. am i inturpreting that wrong?

The keys to this IMO are

                      1. Keeping a very light grip and softness in the arms and wrists to all the COAM to happen through impact

                      2. Keeping the hands close in to the body

                      3. Feel you 'collect' the ball on the way through

                        Re: lets discuss lag

Strength is not needed to create lag.
