  • Ben Hogans 5 lessons

One thing that im kind of confused about in Ben Hogans 5 lessons is a ball position issue. There is a diagram that illustrates proper ball position that appears to open the stance with anything from the 6 iron down to the wedges. The theory is to clear the left hip and shortening your arc which sacrifices distance but improves accuracy. When I chip I use an open stance and when I play my pitching wedge shot from 130 yards and in, I dont turn my hips on the backswing but I line my feet up perfectly to the target and im very accurate with this shot. Ive noticed that if I make a hip turn with my wedge im off target so im basically doing the same thing with shortening my arc. If im understanding the book correctly I should open my stance and take my hip turn? Ill be trying this at the range but Im just wondering if anyone plays this way or if im just not understanding the issue fully.

I love this book. I read it again and again. My 2 cents. When u hit a widge you don't have big swing. Hence you don't have time to clear hips. With open stance you have already cleared the hip - sort of.

      hi
nkranga is spot on what what he says, the reason hogan only opens on the short irons is so he is sure his hips are clear and on long irons and driver hes is a bit closed in his stance, he also does not move his ball about but only his righr foot. i think that set up does not work for every one and few copy it to the letter. if your wedge shots are good then stay with what you have and improve on it, hogans book is a great read and has the basics that you need to play well, but once you have the fundementals you can then start tweeking your swing.
