which hand?

In watching golf on tv, i have begun to really notice a change in grips amoung the pros. on that really have me perplexed is the left hand on bottom or switch girp. can you tell me the benifits of this and when shound i expirement with new grips or should i even bother.
Also I have seen alot of the belly putters being used ( like VJ Singh's ) are those for the everyday player or pros only?
