  • Should I join a golf club?

    Hi,

I am currently living in Dallas, and we are surrounded by a plethora or golf courses including many decent places where a round can be had for $30 or less (with cart) particularly if you brave the afternoon heat. I would guess that we will be here for at least another couple of years or so.

I would guess that on average I play 4 rounds a month in Dallas (plus a couple a month in Houston with the in-laws), and needless to say I would like to play a lot more, I would also like the opportunity to play in competitions as I'm sure that will help to improve my game, and also meet some other avid golfers.

What I am trying to work out is whether or not I should join a golf club. I auditioned a place yesterday (Twin Creeks GC in Allen) which has a 'limited access' family membership for $3000 a year (unlimited weekday and weekends after 11:00) which covers green fees and GPS cart fees too, it also covers your green (but not cart) fees at 3 other country clubs. Anyway, it was a very nice course (particularly for faders) and seemed pretty challenging, and had a good atmosphere. I reckon that between my wife and me we could play 10+ rounds a month (making each round ~$25) and we can afford the dues. I also think that I will play whenever I want and am able (not being tempted to wait for twilight rates etc) and wont feel like I am wasting money if I only play 9. It will be nice to play in the different competitions and leagues, and great way of meeting new people (we are both pretty new to Dallas). I definitely think it will help me improve my game (with free practice facilities) and I will be able to take a few lessons with the pro.

The in-laws are members of a very nice club in Houston (Shadowhawk) and they seem to love being members and rarely if ever play any other courses in Houston. Am I likely to become bored of playing the same course repeatedly? Would you join a club that rates itself as a $60-70/round course or continue playing the cheaper municipal and public courses?

    What would you do?
