  • My new/refurbished driver

Okay, so, as we all know, golf is a bit of a head game at times. Mine has been that way for a couple years....at least on the driver side of things. Everything else has been pretty good, considering I don't get to play as much as I used to. Anyway, the driver had been consistent, down the middle to somewhere around the 300 yard marker. Over the past couple years it started to fade some....then slice more and more. I changed drivers and moved up to a stiff shaft. This corrected the issue for a little while, but then back to the same ****.
Anyway, to the head game side of it. My 3 wood is my best long club in the bag. I never mess up a shot with it, so I've often used it instead of my driver on especially bad days. So, a while back I was suckered into driving my wife around to some yard sales. At one a guy had some of his old clubs for sale. I picked up a TaylorMade Burner Plus for $3, mostly because when I set up with it, it looks and felt a lot like my 3 wood. I'm not exactly sure the sizing on the head, but it's got to be 300cc or less.
On to the range. I brought that club home, grabbed my golf shoes and headed straight to the range with it and my regular driver. After a few easy shots to get the height of the tee, I proceeded to unload on about 2/3rds of a large bucket of balls. Of course, I did duff a couple, but every ball was straight and most of them were hitting into the trees at the back of the driving range which is at the 250 yard marker. Anyway, just for testing purposes I grabbed my regular driver(Cleveland Hi-Bore clone) and started cranking them right down the middle with it....for about the first 10 balls, then they started slicing again. Back to the TaylorMade. Right down the middle. Since then I've hit numerous buckets of balls with this club....always taking the other driver along as a test driver....and I've always come up with the same results. TaylorMade right down the middle 250 yards....Hi-Bore 10 balls or so down the middle then back comes the slice.
The big concern was the slice, but of course we all want good distance as well. The 250(approx.) in the air was good enough for me, especially considering the fact that the Hi-Bore(when I hit it straight) as well as a R7 that a guy let me try a couple drives with went about the same distance.

    So, on to the refurbishment.
Being an older driver the head was kind of scratched up. I fixed that with 180>320>600>800>1500 grit sandpaper. The head now shines like the stainless steel it's made of.
The shaft was the original steel shaft that came in it. The grip was completely worn out. I switched this up with a Fujikura E360 stiff shaft and Tour Velvet grip and had the shaft measured and cut so it's perfect for me.

Bottom line: My drive has never been better. I'm once again happy with most of my game. Now I'll have to work on the putting.

Here's the finished product. The head looks kinda small and awkward compared to the 460cc clubs they're selling now, but hey, it works for me.
Working...
