I think this is very poor for the top players who originally agreed to play, to then withdraw from this tournament leaving the organisers having to ask players who were not invited to then turn up and play as second choice.

    Quote....................

The list of withdrawals includes the world's top four - Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els as well as Sergio Garcia.

Americans Chris DiMarco, Fred Couples and Davis Love have also turned down the chance to play in the 16-man field.

First round losers in the event earn £60,000. For 36 Holes.

I don't think they should be asked again.

    Re: HSBC World Matchplay

Golf used to be a Gentleman's game. Now all it is is money and majors. Tiger woods has been both good AND bad for for the game. Funny, so much money being paid to guys who can bust it a mile but can't hit a fairway. If you want them to show up you gotta pay them a LARGE appearance fee, and then it's a maybe. Sad part is, you gotta ask them again just in hope they'll show up and draw the fans. I'm becomming less a fan. I love to play, I don't need to watch.
