  • Wide Swing

    Just some food for thought....

Struggled on the 1st couple of holes with my driver yesterday. My father pointed out that it didn't look like I was swinging "big" like normal. So I thought, why not make a nice, big, wide backswing and then work my right shoulder down and forward (which has shown great success lately, see the artwork above )

I spread my stance just a little more than normal (outsides of my feet just past the outsides of my shoulders), flared both feet (left to 10:30, right to 1:30), and made sure I had complete balance at the setup. From there, made a low takeaway that felt a little slower than normal, and made sure that I focused on making a FULL shoulder turn....

Well, the results were amazing. Just by adjusting my setup and making a wide, full backswing, my distance and accuracy increased. I was 3 over on the 1st 6 holes, shot EVEN from the 7th hole on. From the 7th on, I hit an amazing 8 out of 9 fairways. As with the 1st 6 holes, I only hit 2 out of 5. Based on the in cart GPS, I was hitting my drives between 270-290 yards. I'll take that ALL DAY LONG!

The big backswing made my drives feel effortless. I didn't feel that I had to swing "hard."

If you are just finishing reading this, I guess I would say I have 2 takeaways from yesterday...

    1) I give WAY too much thought to my swing and not my setup. I should practice my setup as much as I practice my swing. Not just step into balls at the range and swing away.

    2) A full shoulder turn makes a big difference. It was obvious with my drives. But I also noticed it with my irons as well.

Hopefully this with *click* for someone else and they will see success!
