I only made the point that sometimes the hands can be way too far in front because I have played with a guy who does just that - the ball goes all over the place with no power at all. (Does quite a bit of damage to the ground at times, though.)

It surely ain't that hard to work out if your hands are leading the club head or not.

Apart from video, I don't find it that easy to work out. My hands are certainly ahead of the club head coming down, but the impact zone is a blur and I can't really tell what's happening there. Even with video, that critical part of the swing is generally a blur, at least with the kind of video equipment I have.

The idea that I should have a 20* lean of the club shaft with short irons and a 10* lean (at impact) with longer irons certainly makes sense, but those are small angles, maintained for a fleeting moment. The lean of the club shaft isn't something I can consciously control. Not yet anyway.

Then, Todd, something like the right hand drill may be worth a try. Just remember to still release on the follow through.

i always think of the impact point a good few inches in front of the ball, a point where both arms are fully extended. when i make impact with the ball i still have some bend in my right elbow and only past the impact point that both arms extend and the clubhead passes my hands.

You should visualise the nail at 20 and 10 degrees respectively not the shaft. Hit at the nail and just let the club swing, it should take care of it's self.

Yup. I was only responding to the comment that's it's easy to determine whether my hands are ahead of or behind the club head. I don't find it that easy. I don't really try to visualize the shaft angle.

It occurs to me that visualization might work better for some than others. I wonder if that has ever been studied. Never really thought about it before.

I wonder if marking a "nail spot" on the ball would be helpful...

I think that is definitely the case; I have real problems [SK3] creating the open-to-close rotation just by visualising the ball flight. I can "see" my drive going out right no problem, I'm used to that but can't see it coming back - however I'm working on a different image that some one suggested.

Anyway I thought a small progress report from someone who has been having problems implementing 3Skills might be useful to sceptics.

Yesterday I reached the relatively easy Par 3 18th needing (I found out when checking the card) a Par to break my PB - as it happens I put my first OOB, messed up a 8ft chip on the reload to come away with a 6.

So what.

Well my PB was set from the yellow, non-comp tees on a fine summer day with only a slight breeze and the fairways giving you good roll. Yesterday the fairways still had surface water after some torrential rain and the ball wasn't running much; the course was set up so that men were off the white comp tees (there'd been a comp the day before) the wind was such that, on a short hole where a PW would normally be enough I was 20 yards short with a well hit 8 iron - the wind also played havoc around and on the greens.

Yesterday my main focus was angle of descent (SK1*) and I had the subjective impression that in so much as the conditions allowed I was striking the ball better. Given my performance for 17 holes in those conditions (a friend suggested that they made the course at least 6 shots harder) I'd say that 3Skills has started to help my game.

SK1* For Todd's benefit; you'll see that I say "angle of descent" - this is because I find it easier to think of how the club head is moving down over a longer distance than just the impact area to the angled nail head; comes to the same difference I think but you might want to try it.

I struggled with sk2 a little at first, I have always hit the ball really well and very straight but with very little distance or divot from 8iron up compared with my partners, I found by trying to change my angle of attack I was keeping a little more weight on my left (yes Left) side in the backswing, this was an automatic respose of my body simply because I was trying to nail it down.

SK3 is the most difficult for me as I have always hit straight or maybe a little fade, again my view of this was to keep my right foot (yes right) still down until my hands drop down inside, almost like staying in the right side through impact, every lesson I ever have the result was letting myself go through to early, with the three skills it has cured this automatically by trying to attack from inside.......................its impossible to attack from inside if you go to early.

I still hit some old type shots but one thing is for sure, Like most of the converts here once you hit ONE ball using all three your hooked it feels great.

Not sure what we can do with Todd he seems to be really suffering with this....!!!

Obviously scoring is not just about ball striking; like many high caps I'm often short of the green and my first "putt" is actually a chip so ppr target is around 30 not 36 to allow for this.

My PB was set with iirc 27 putts - I've just dug out my scorecard and checked, yesterday I had 35 putts.

Sadly it wasn't actually a PB - unless we open a "bad weather" category - however as requested by other posters it was a quantifiable improvement in ball striking in that I made up the 8 strokes lost to a poor short game and whatever for the lousy weather.

Interestingly my psr is much the same as yours - effectively a slomo rehearsal rather than a practice swing - as posted I still have "rotation" issues but I have my new mental image as supplied by Brian to work on.

Obviously I can't tell you what the new mental image is as thats Brian and my secret
