The most unorthodox shot I've ever seen was Seve Ballesteros. His ball was in a bunker, against the back lip. In other words, he couldn't get a club on it, as he'd hit the lip of the bunker. So he took his putter (which was like the mini-putt style), turned it on end, and pounded it through the lip.

Isnt that illegal?
You must only strike the ball with the face of your club.
The exception is putter where you can use the back of the club aslong as it is identical to the front.
You see many people tap in with the back of their putter, its actually a penalty.

I'm not sure, Gree. It may be nowadays, but it may have not been a rule back in the day.

A little OT, I thought it was illegal to have a club with a striking surface on both sides (making dual chippers illegal).

yep it is, except for putters and both side must be identical

A: Yes. A player may play a stroke with any part of the clubhead, provided the ball is fairly struck at (Rule 14-1) and the club conforms with Rule 4-1.

Well not really, playing a right handed club left handed is very different than hitting the back of a club.

Maybe you missed this part.

"A player may play a stroke with ANY PART of the clubhead".

That is right you don't get a additional penalty stroke when you hit a "hosel rocket".

after pushing my 3 iron on a 210 yards par 3 found my ball pin high under a bushy tree! couldn't hit the ball high (hanging branch) to go over the bunker between my ball and the hole. Took a 5 iron and hit it very hard in the bunker, ball hit the bunker hard, jump out, rolled and stopped next to the hole for a tap in! you know one of those moments that I couldn't repeat if I tried.

From my elusive youth. Hooked drive on 17th right up to the train tracks with a steep railway embankment. I was a couple under my hcp so I didn't want to waste any shots. Barely inbounds but I would have to stand almost four feet above the ball (I was just over five feet at the time) so noway to reach the ball. Then I heard the train coming, so I stepped away, took a 7I, hooded the blade and hit it right at the train when it passed, hit the wheels and bounced into a green bunker, made my up-and-down for par. Wouldnät try that today, and besides the tracks are no longer there.

That's actually quite interesting - that as long as the club is conforming, you can strike the ball any way you like.

And when you stop to think about it, we already knew that. We don't penalise ourselves for the hosel rocket, nor the skyball (that leaves idiot marks on drivers).
