  • Thought about it and it worked

Just under 100yd from green, an easy pitch except for the wet longish grass and the overhanging tree.

Remembered some of the advice on here and played it well back in stance with a 7I, hands to about rib cage on back swing and just punched through on the downswing.

Came out fast on a low trajectory hit the green and stopped dead about 7ft away.

    Got the putt as well!

    Thanks guys.

friend of mine plays this shot so well it is amazing. I can hit the green with this shot but cant get close to hole it with one put. find it very difficult to judge how hard to hit it and find it difficult to pratcise it in the range because of the pace of the greens compared to grass on the range, any tips?

Thats the first time I'd tried it so it was probably beginner's luck and to be honest I'd have been happy to hit the green - the putt was a bonus.

So, no real tip except that I knew how a shorter but similar 7I bump and run from a decent lie* would go and just played it hoping it would come out quicker from the wet grass and it did.

I'll hand over to the likes Greg, Teaching Pro, S4P etc for better advice.

      * I sometimes play this instead of a 3/4 wedge because the downside when it goes wrong is less .

bdbl, it sounds like the shot I leave myself on hole #5 when my drive is long and right (behind a tree). I grab the ol' 7, and hit a punch (low finish) with the same effect.

The tip is to take more club, only take the club back to hands at hip high (or rib cage, depending on how far you have to go), and make sure you swing through - accelerate the whole way (otherwise the result is the same for every other time you quit on a swing).

The other cool time I used it is when I was ~80 yards out. Had a creek to cross, and some trees in my line (I had found the left side tree line). So I grabbed the 7i, took my hands to about rib cage high, and furiously turned my hands over through impact. I hit this low, screaming hook that ended up on the green.

Sometimes shot making is fun. (When it's not fun is when you don't pull the shot off).

I like to use a 5 iron on these shots, its lower loft keeps the ball nice and low and it is possible to get a good roll on if needed. I also like to play it like a chip with the 5 iron if under low trees with around 30/40 yards to the green or if there is a narrow approach to the green with hazards each side.
