Now that Tiger has reached ten majors (July 2005) and is not even thirty years old he must be in with a very real chance of doing what many thought impossible.

A new highlight: Golfing the home course on Christmas Day.
I say it too often: If it's golf club shaped, you can play with it.
For the record, I'm a club doctor, not a swing doctor.
Re: Can Tiger Win More Majors Than Jack?
I think it's realistic. I remember hearing somewhere that while Tiger likes to win, he's especially focused on majors. Maybe he's tired of hearing about the 'Tiger Slam', and actually would like to win a Grand Slam, and join Bobby Jones?

Tiger can pass Jack's record, and i think Tiger will win 20+. The golfer's peak years are typically in the 30's and Tiger is a mere 29.

Re: Can Tiger Win More Majors Than Jack?
I think he has the mindset for it and courses play more and more into his hands as they lengthen them. It all depends on how many times he decides to change his swing. He loses 2 years of Major winning for every time he does it. He cant afford to do that too many more times.
Barring the arrival of another teen phenom, I think he will continue to dominate. Vijay is the only one of the other top five that doesnt fear him and he will be too old to sustain a challenge in a few years.
Sergio seems to be missing that last piece, Rose, Poulter and Casey are probably going to follow the paul McGinley/Darren Clarke/Lee Westwood trail and win lots of money but no Majors.
It was kind of telling that theres probably only 4 or 5 guys in the world still active on the regular tour capable of the mental strength required to beat Tiger.
Faldo. Langer, Olazabal, Couples and maybe Monty have the mental toughness required. But they are all past their best on the technical side.
Daly, Els and Mickelson have the talent but not the will.
Singh and Goosen have the work ethic but both have fundamental flaws in their games, Singh is a sporadic putter and Goosen has trouble finishing off.
Guys like Adam Scott and Charles Howell III have yet to prove they are contenders, of that group probably Scott is the most likely if he can start contending at Majors regularly.
All in all the target is there for the taking. I think he will make it by 2012 by which time he will be 36 about the time Nicklaus hit his first real Major slump. Thats only 9 majors out of 30 i think Tiger can manage that.

Woody Paige seems to think that he will do it by 2010, and win 4 that year.

Re: Can Tiger Win More Majors Than Jack?
It appears that I am the only one who thinks NO.....................
I think the competition is to great nowerdays and players work harder at their game, not sure about you guys but I think there comes a time when you simply cannot get better, alot of the top tour players from both sides of the pond have the game to win at any competition at any time.
They need abit of luck with lies and bounces to get the mind set into winning mode, once the body thinks "today is my day" ususally after a birdie on the first for us mere amatures, then the game is raised, the thing is it was already there, it just needed a kickstart, hence my comments 'can it keep getting any better'.
Tigers main strengh is that he has won many times and the kickstart is easier, and of course he now has the mental strenth to stay in front.
We are not any different, once we break 90/80/70 whatever it gives us the mental strengh to do it again, so we improve.
However I don't think Tiger will win more because he doesn't play in many comps and by not playing others keep winning building up their mental strength, if he plays every comp and keeps the pressure on the other guys then he might.
Just a last thought..........If you were a tour player entering this week Buick open and Tiger wasn't playing, your mental strengh would increase immeadiatly.
Ian.

Re: Can Tiger Win More Majors Than Jack?
Some great points, Ian.
However, re: the Buick Open, with Tiger shooting -11 in one round how does that effect the mental strength of the entire field?

Re: Can Tiger Win More Majors Than Jack?
first of all being the guy I am as I rad it you cant answer this question "no."I would have to say that it is a possiblitly that Tiger CAN win more majors than Jack if you were going on statistical data. The real question is "will" Tiger win more majors than Jack?
I bow and look for further dialogue

Re: Can Tiger Win More Majors Than Jack?
When asked recently whether he would catch Jack Nicklaus in majors Tiger replied simply "yep".
Tiger has a lot of golf left in him and if the past bunch of years has been any indication I'd have to agree that he will. When Tiger is on the money he's clearly the best out there.
This is to take nothing away from Jack Nicklaus. I grew up watching him play and I never thought anyone would beat his majors record in my lifetime.

Granted he lost the PGA but I'll use it as an examply anyway. He played very poorly one day, so-so 2 days and had one good day and he still only finished 2 out of a playoff.
The masters this year, he had one really bad day as well, and still won it. I think that just puts to much pressure on the other guys. They know they have to have their absolute best game for 4 days, where Tiger doesn't have to.

Re: Can Tiger Win More Majors Than Jack?
I would have to say he can. When Tiger is in the field the majority of the players immediately want to know what he is doing. Once a player asks that he is behind already. The biggest question is can his back support his swing for the next 10 years. If it does he will break Jack's record. If his back fails then he will not.

Re: Can Tiger Win More Majors Than Jack?
I am pretty sure Tiger will break Jacks record. Tiger's short game is 100% the best I have ever seen and that is what makes him so great. By his own admission he has not putted great this year and I think the only way he would not beat Jack's record is if his putting left him (Jack was an unbelievable putter right through his career).
That said I am constantly disappointed by watching players choke when Tiger is in contention. It really is as if they are scared of him, even the top players. Only Vijay and Ernie really have the game to beat Tiger when all are on but Vijay's putting is (comparatively) dreadful and Ernie just doesn't seem to have the mental edge. Unless someone really comes along and takes it to Tiger he will continue winning majors at a good rate.

Re: Can Tiger Win More Majors Than Jack?
Although Tiger is the best for now, I think there are too many players catching him up, most of the majors are more prone to the lower ranked players having a chance. Tiger does every shot but on tight fairways it kills him. Muirfield is a great example on the Saturday when the wind got up.
