  • Chippers

    Hello again all,

Just wanted a bit of info. I was wondering about chippers. I dont own a chipper myself but i saw them in my local golf shop. Is a chipper a legal club to use or not? Because i thourght i read somewhere that they wasn't but i might be wrong. So if anyone can spread some light on this topic that would be great...thanx again.

    Re: Chippers

there are a few threads on here if you do a quick dearch. Chippers are not illegal as long as they only have one face. Any club with two faces is illegal, except a putter. That being said, a chipper is useless. It is a one dimentional club that is easily replicated with your wedge. The sole purpose of the chipper is to teach you to use a putting swing to hit chip shots, so with your wedge, use a pendulum swing to hit the ball. And you don't even need to buy another club!!

        hi tj,
gord is absolutely spot on with what he said but i bought one just to see what they were like and i love it! i had the technique right with a wedge but just love using chipper i can normally hit to within 3 or 4 inches with it. each to their own!

                Hi TJ,

If you have an illegal club, you shouldn't (maybe can't?) post your score for handicapping purposes. So you might as well put the 15th club in there, too. Not being condescending, just make sure to go back to 14 clubs when you're ready to start handicapping yourself.

Now, let's say you've got a legal chipper, and you're playing a competitive round.

With your bag, I'd just add the chipper, as you're only at 13 clubs.

IF I had 14 clubs (I'm going to tell you to buy a sand wedge and a gap wedge), I'd drop the fairway woods (or driver, depending on how well I hit it).

The reason being is that I'm not going to stick any greens with a fairway wood - it's simply a club to get me into position to stick a green. When I stop to consider that I can hold greens with anything more lofted than a 7 iron, all of a sudden I don't have to be tremendously close to a green. (IMO, the logic escapes me why you'd ever tee off with a fairway wood. I've got no confidence in that tiny little head. I'd rather hit an iron if I'm not going to hit driver.)

Thats a very good point mate. I have 14 clubs already with my added 60* wedge but like you said if i dont tee off with my driver im use and iron 7 or 8 in most cases i dont use my fairway woods to tee off. Might be just me but you made a very good point there mate. Thanx.

                    Re: Chippers

I golf with a friend who has a chipper. He uses it like an approach iron. If he's within 125 yards, he hits the crazy chipper with better consistency than most of us hit our irons!

I think that goes to show how much about golf is feel and confidence. He is confident with this club, using it in a way for which it was not designed, and he uses it effectively.

I was blasting my 3 wood between 270 and 300 yards on the weekend off the tee, perfectly straight down the middle. I hit two green from the fairway 260 and 270 yards out with my 3 wood and hit 2 more greens from the fairway 220 and 230 out with my 5 wood. That is why I would put a fairway wood in my bag over an extra wedge. I can always choke down on my PW to get GW distance, I can't hit anything from the fairway more than 210.
