Mizuno MP measurements

Hi,

I'm due to change the shafts on my MP-33s, and was wondering if anyone knows the answers to the following questions:

Do Mizuno measure their clubs using the USGA and R&A rules, that is, using the 60 deg measurement, or simply the length from the natural lie position.

What is the hosel depth of an MP-33, probably the same as the other MPs I guess, but what is this depth?

I'd assume that it's length measured according to the stock lie angle. Since length and lie are intertwined, it makes the most sense that OEM's state length relative to their spec lie.

As for the hosel depth, it's immaterial - they're tapered hosels. For parallel hosels, it's usually a scooch over 1.25".

Another thing - I've just swingweighted my mp33s, and also my mp30s, and I was surprised to see that the mp30s (rifle 5.0, std length/lie/grips) came in at D0, whereas the MP33s came in at D2 (rifle 5.5, std length, 1deg up). I thought all MP irons were at D2.

Welcome to the world of tolerances - including (but not limited to) +/-2 degrees in loft and lie and +/- 3g in headweight.

Swingweight is a function of length and weight - change a head by 2g to change 1 swingweight point, and 3 points for every 1/2" in club length.

So you see, with a head being 'acceptable' at being 3g out, it's also 'acceptable' to be out 1.5 swingweight points.

The average player cannot detect a 2 swingweight point change (4g headweight), and most can detect 4 points.

In this day and age, what you actually want to promote consistency is lengths corellating to lie and progressive swingweights (ie an MOI match).

I've thought about moi matching the set. I have a standard 14" fulcrum balance, I assume it's just progressive swing weighting from the 3 iron to PW, but how do I start with the 3 iron if, say, I wanted them all to feel like my 7 iron at D2? Assuming std length/lie.

Should you have the correct head weight differences (8g) to peform MOI matching? If 7g differences, I assume I just add a gram to the head or shaft to compensate?

I have an Auditor MOI Speed Match machine; and had the gen 1 machine before it.

The 'down and dirty' method is to use 1/2" length steps and 8g headweight increments; or to use 3/8" length steps and 7g headweight increments.

If you're serious about MOI matching, search the net for Dave Tutleman and follow his recommendations - they're pretty accurate.

Hmmm. Been reading Tutleman's articles, MOI matching is scaring me! I don't like having to estimate things with formulas, I have a swing balance, so I think I will sw my clubs as I know what I am getting.

On another note, I have several sets of irons that I've recently been ripping the grips off and then spining them - bought from ebay - they come in various lengths, presumably originally used in oem clubs. However, do you happen to know, by fact, what the raw length of each shaft should be for a Mizuno MP set? I could probably guess that you minus the length of the club (in its lie position) from 1/8" for the grip cap, and 1" for the "bottom", but wondered if official figures are published so I can determine whether I need to add to or cut any of the shafts?

The simple message from Dave for MOI matching is to use 1.33 SW points per inch.

It takes some math, but works well.

Most OEM's use tapered shafts - sold pre-cut to length. IOW, your 3i shaft is the longest, and your PW shaft is the shortest. They come from the factory pre-cut (I've got KB Tours and KB V Launch shafts here - the V Launch are parallel tip and all the same length, and the Tours are tapered and all pre-cut).

Another MP question.

I bought an mp-60 demo 6-iron that is 2deg upright and 1/2" longer. If I were to cut down the shaft by 1/2" on the demo iron, would this effectively flatten the lie angle by 1 degree as the head will be a touch closer to my feet, thereby producing a standard Mizuno length club with 1 degree upright lie angle?

If this is the case, does this then mean that a head from a standard length and lie Mizuno club is different to the head on the demo club (1 degree upright)?

Actually, it'll mean you have a club that's 2 degrees up and standard length.

BUT, it will play 1 degree flat (compared to where it used to be).

Fitting length trumps fitting lie, IMO. Better to bend the club than perform surgery!

To clarify, physically, the demo club will always be 2 degs upright compared to a standard club? But cutting it down by 1/2" will artificially play a degree less but physically still be 2 deg upright?
