My driver broke...should I reshaft?

Hi, last week my graphite driver shaft snapped (whilst practicing my swing on the first tee!!). It's a PGF Spitfire 460cc. I got it cheap, but have always driven well with it. My question is, is it worth reshafting? And if it is worth it, what shaft should I look for? Money's tight at the moment so I can't spend too much.

Hi Koogas,

As you say, it's not an expensive club. It'll cost you a minimum of $50, depending on the quality of shaft, to restore it. Obviously, you could choose a $300 shaft, but that would not make sense. A club repairer given his choice to do the job will put in a pulled shaft (which is not a bad deal if he has a good one) or a cheap $15 shaft.

I do a lot of my own work and have lots of shafts hanging around, so it's no sweat for me to consider reshafting, but if you're going outside to get it done, there's an added value charge.

I know you said money is short, but I would not put more money into the old club, I would look for a brand name used club in local auctions or classifieds, or demos at stores. It will last you for a few years, and likely hold 50% of the price you bought it for.

The bad news is that even if you go out and buy another Spitfire, you're unlikely to get the same shaft (even if the graphics are the same) and you've got a very slim chance of having the spine oriented in the proper direction.

If you like looking at the head, reshaft is completely viable.

If you want a new driver, though, now's the time!
