does anyone have a thought on if my shafts (steel) being 1 inch longer needs to be stiff?

I think they need to be fit to how you swing (clubhead speed, tempo, loading).

Shafts are only so stiff - you can find yourself in 'too soft' a flex, even if you start with an X flex; if you make it long enough.
