  • Junior Club Question

Trying to find out some more information on the correct shaft for my daughter. Here current driver shaft is 47 grams 235 cpm and 39". One club fitter is telling me that we need to have a 55 gram and 220cpm, the other club fitter save 50 gram and 245-250 cpm. Her average club swing speed is 72 mph average drive is 170. She is 9 years old.

How much do I need to worry about CPM?

    Thanks,

    Ed

    Re: Junior Club Question

Final butt CPM is a feel thing - and some players are very susceptible to the feel in their hands.

But we're discussing about 3 "flexes" difference in the recommendations.

Far more important with a 70 mph swing than flex is loft. She should be hitting the highest lofted driver she can find for maximum launch.

Are the clubmakers making their flex recommendations based off of testing or simply that she swings at 72 mph?

They are basing it on her club swing speed. Her current driver is 14 degrees.

        Honestly, it's not enough data.

I try not to consider age when I fit (it's tough sometimes when you're looking at a kid or a super-senior). Rather, I look at the golfer's swing. Swingspeed, launch angle, where they release the club, tempo, how physically strong they are - all these things need to be taken into consideration before making a recommendation. Then you have to test - just because two shafts cycle at 250 at the butt doesn't mean they play the same or launch the same - or even necessarily feel identical. There are some best guesses for sure, but arbitrary butt CPM numbers are just that - arbitrary.
