  • Iron length

I have real trouble using my 3 and 4 irons, (blades). I tend to slice them more often than not. I'm in the process of re-gripping at the moment and was thinking of trimming about an inch off each, to make them roughly similar in length to my 5 iron, which I can use. My question is, would this make them more playable and would it mean that I'd lose distance with them?

    Re: Iron length

Taking 1/2 inch off your 4I and 1 inch off your 3I will very slightly affect your distance, but the lie will be different slightly as well. You may want to see if who ever is working on your clubs can adjust your lie if they are taking some length off.

I would suggest choking down on the irons if you are looking for control instead of cutting length off if you are talking 1 inch or less.

I'm re gripping them myself, so I was going to cut them myself. But I hear what you're saying about the lie, so I think I'll leave them and try choking down as you suggest. Maybe just re gripping them may help.

      Cheers.

If you are regripping yourself, try going with a smaller grip for those two clubs. This will help your wrists turn over easier. Use a smaller grip if you fade, larger grips for a draw.

Here is an idea: instead of re-gripping your 3 and 4 irons which you slice and are generally pretty tough to hit, replace them with hybrids.

Seriously ... hybrids are F-A-R easier to hit.

Shortening the club, changing grip size, etc. all make marginal differences at best and still the long irons are tough to hit.
