Any one playing SMT drivers? I am interested in the 455 with an accuflex evolution shaft..... Help please

Seriously, as you can see from my tag line, I play SMT clubs. In fact, I just bought the SMT Durometer wedges, (need shafts), and will be putting together the SMT 303CB1's over the winter (yes, I'm a club ho).
My 'into the wind' club is an SMT Spectrum at 9º with the Evolution R at 44.75". My 'with the wind or no wind' club is an SMT HP420 at 10º (actually playing 10.5º) with the YS-6 S at 44.5".
I've been looking into a 455DB for a while (but I'm hitting the 391cc Spectrum and 420cc HP quite well).
I strongly recommend SMT products. The only thing to remember for the Evolution is that it's more stout than it says. I have a swing speed of ~ 108, and I don't fully load the Evolution - even though the Accuflex website suggests I try the S flex. The general rule of thumb for the Evo is to play one flex softer than you normally would (ie if you normally take a stiff flex, play the Evo regular).Comment

Well Ricky, looking at your bag, I could have made two bags of components for the same money - and they would probably have performed just as well. Just to give you an idea of how expensive components are. Granted, you can buy some components that end up just as expensive as last years' driver, if you like.
Setting up a shop is a little capital intensive, yes, but if you like assembling clubs, you end up not minding.
My first clubmaking 'job' was a set of wedges. I used a vise (you really can't build clubs without one), some sandpaper, and the double-sided-tape and solvent for the grips.
The only thing I would have changed was the way I installed the grips. Had I been aware of the compressor method, I wouldn't have bothered with solvent and tape and all that sh*te.
If I was starting out, and just looking to build the occasional club, I would buy the following for my shop:
Air compressor (1/3HP, 3gallon tank or better)
WD40
Bench Vise
Rags
Acetone
Popsicle sticks
Sandpaper (150 grit)
Tube cutter (plumbers' tool)
Hacksaw and grit-edge blade.
If I was going to build a set of clubs, I'd swap out and add the following:
I'd swap out the tube cutter and hacksaw for a chop saw.
I'd invest in a belt sander and a linen belt - golfworks.com has a lovely combo (which I've now purchased, and wonder why I didn't do this right away, either).
And if you're going to get serious, there's all sorts of shaft profiling toys you can buy (in fact, I'm considering an MOI machine from Tom Wishon Golf Technology).Comment

I am very interested in the evolution shaft, any more feedback please. I have used a graffalloy blue before but found this a little to stiff in regular is this similar to the evolution in regular? I am currently using a alpha reaction v2 3 wood with a accuflex 02 shaft in reg which I really like, also a grafalloy prolite35 in reg can these be compared to a evolution? I put more load on a YS-6 in S than I do on an Evo R. I've got a Blue in my 3 wood in S, and I load it better than I load the Evo.
Why not get another 02 in R, or go to the VS339?Comment

I've heard great things about both the Babylon and the VS339.
With a 90 mph swing speed, why not try the Babylon in 12º or 13º to maximise you distance?Comment

I'll have to sneak them in past homestead security (read: SWMBO).
The problem is that I've got a set of SnakeEyes 600XC's 6-LW sitting here, as my original winter project.
I could probably assemble some SMT irons (as I've got Durometer wedge heads on top of the fridge), and sell off the clubs that don't make it (or keep them for the backup bag), but I just finished liquidating my inventory to keep the Mrs. happy...
I'm pretty sure come late spring I'll have a set of combo's up for sale, either way. (They've been good to me, but I need something with a higher ball flight. I plan to talk to Mike @ SMT to see if I should even go ahead with his irons - he's on the level, so I'm sure he'll let me know if they'll get the ball up as high as the XC's).Comment

If you are looking for a bit less costly shafts that perform at basically the same level, try the Harrison Striper Titaniums. For the 2 or 3 extra yards I could get with an Evo, I will save the $50 buying the Striper.Comment

SMT babylon 12 degree with an Accuflex VS339 shaft, played 2 rounds with this club and I can honestly say it is the best £150 ever spent... Highly recommended. It does'nt look like a 12 degree and it still rolls on landing, well pleased! The SMT head is the nicest driver head I've ever seen/used and I've been through loads G2,983K,GBB11,Makser 400,Precept moonsole,TM 540+580xd,TMXR03,TM200 etc. It's very fogiving and a lovely ruby head colour(not like the website pictures) The shaft is excellent as well, very stifff for regular but nice feedback on impact....any way off to save for a solitare!
