Golf Clubs Lengthened

I just bought some golf clubs from a friend of mine about 5 months ago. After speaking with my best friend and playing golf with him the last few months he said I need to get the golf clubs lengthen to fit me. I am about 6'4 to 6'5 and went to a golf pro shop to see how long they need to be lengthened. The guy did the wrist to ground measurment and after everything he said I need to add 3" to the clubs. He called me back few days ago and he said it will be $100.00 for 12 clubs.

Now for a few questions:

1: Has anyone ever had this done with their golf clubs and does it help?
2: With the people that has had this done, did the golf club ever break where the extension is added?
3: Is 3" too much to add and breaking a good possiblity to happen?
4: Is that a good price to pay to get this done?

Finally, any ideas and what you think about getting clubs fitted/lengthened for yourself would be great and how it is actually done, thanks for any info!!!

Like I said, I have only been playing and around golf for 5 months so please put in lamens terms, would be appreciated.

I have posted this at other sites and am now very worried about extensions as every person was against doing this and I was very curious what people at this site thought as I am going to get exact measurements on every club on Wednesday, 11-23-05.

I think 3inch is a little too long of extension. I have heard that 2inch is about the most as anyone would do.

I had my driver extended by 1/2in and certainly there were not problems with that but it may be better for you to get new shafts, which obviously would involve a lot more cost.

I am sure all the clubmakers on this site will give you some good opinions.

You could try looking around in the used club bins for an iron similar to your own set and have that lengthened. Try it at the range and see if it helps.


1. Yes I have and it sure does help. Playing with clubs that don't fit is a form of self abuse.

2. I've never had an extension break. Never gone 3 inches though.

3. I know a Pro who plays clubs that long. I think he is 6'6 or 6'7 and has no choice.

4. Use the phone to compare quotes. Might want to get a second opinion as well. Don't rush into anything. The golf business is the same as any other business - you have money, they want it.

I have been reading about this trying to find out the most I can about it and I have heard the most is 2" and not 3" so if I do it I dont think I will do 3".

Well I would appreciate some more people that has had extensions added to their club respond as I only have 1 more day before I go talk to the guy, thanks for your help!!!!

I'd get what length you need and make it clear to the guy your having do this that you'll be back as soon as one comes loose...if it comes loose or breaks. It can and will work, the guy will let you know if 3 inches is too much...just depends on if you're getting a good job or not. Will it effect the flex?

I had a buddy with +1" and a couple clubs had separated or maybe even broke in the grip. I can see why though, I witnessed one of his break (more of a separation in the grip) when he took a 2 foot divot.

When you get your clubs extended, also get the lie adjusted. Being 6'5", you will probably need to be adjusted about 2* up. Just lengthening your clubs will not help you. Once you get all the adjustments made, you will not need extensions longer than 1 1/2 - 2". There is no worry about your club breaking or any damage. It is simply a piece that fits into the butt end of your golf club. What will happen though is with the club being a bit longer it will affect the flex of the shaft - the flex will be slightly softer.

If the extension breaks or comes loose it is simply beacause it was not installed correctly. The epoxy used to attach the extension to your shaft butt is the same as what holds your shaft tip onto the club head which is moving much faster and takes on WAY more torque than the top of your shaft.

Your price is going to be mainly based on the type of grip you choose. The extensions are inexpensive and easy to install. The re-gripping is the more expensive part of this process.

If you are willing to pay a bit more, you may just want to get your clubs completely reshafted. This should cost you about $30 per club. This will relieve all worries about breakage and shaft flex - as long as the builder knows what he is doing. Again, if you are spending that kind of money, get the lie adjusted as well. There is no sense lengthening the clubs without the correct lie.

As I mentioned above, being taller you will probably need the lie adjusted up about 2*. If you do not get this adjusted, you will be taking divits with the toe only of your irons. This leads to thinned shots from the center. If you can only afford either length or lie, choose lie. Adjusting the lie makes the club more upright and will give you a bit more length.

Well this maybe all for not as I just called Golf USA and the guy just told me that bubble shafts cannont have extensions added to them but the guy at the pro shop said he can do it...so now I dont know who to believe and dont know what exactly to do!!!!

I also have a similar dillema. I ran across a set of black dot Ping Eye 2 BeCu at a local golf shop for $249 and I thought it was a bargain and I liked the appearance so I bought it. What I didn't realize at the time was that these clubs were about 1 inch shorter than what I normally play with.

I also have a set of blue dot Ping G2's w/ stiff steel shaft, standard length. I recently got fitted for Ping and the fitter said that I should play the blue dot and .25" longer in regular flex.

I have about $250 in store credits and considering reshafting Ping G2's with TX-90 or Rifle Airlite in regular flex (I would appreciate any feedback on light steel shafts) and using the pulled shafts to replace Ping Eye 2's.

My questions are:

Is this even worth while doing?
Can pulled shafts be used again?
How much difference does 1 inch of length and 1 degree of lie make?

This is only my 2nd time posting (1st was intro) and I would like to thank you in advance.

If you're currently playing stiffs, why are you considering going to regular, especially if you're going to a lighter shaft? I always think it's worth having equipment that fits you.

Can pulled shafts be used again?

As a rule, steel pulls can be used again and again. Graphite pulls must be pulled properly (ie no twisting) otherwise the tip gets compromised (meaning it should break shortly).

How much difference does 1 inch of length and 1 degree of lie make?

For every 0.5" you adjust a club, the effective lie is changed 1º. So, if you make the clubs 1" longer, you make the effective lie 2º more upright. So, by going 1" longer, and 1º up, it's like having standard length clubs bent 3º up. Please note, this whole length/lie interaction is still more art than science.

But it makes the difference of a relaxed, athletic setup, and contorting yourself around the club.

As for tipping a taper tip shaft - this is totally whack...what do you think you will end up with Hmmmm?

Always beware people who get their info from reports (golf magazines). There are plenty of experienced golfers on this and other forums who provide good advice, and then there are...others.

I agree with cmays - unless Indian absolutely cannot hit those stiffs, to go to an ultralight shaft should require staying in the same flex. I agree that one shouldn't tip a tapered shaft, but I thought even tapered shafts have a PTS (albeit a small one)

Also, where did you divine taper shafts? I hadn't read anything about that in the original post?

All right, settle down everyone.

If I remember correctly Ping always used taper tip shafts so this is what mikethemechanic is referring to.

Indian is on another thread now and mhchung has been told he should have reg. rather than stiff. While there may be no tight standards in golf I suspect True Temper know something about shafts and a TX90 R will be in the reg ball park.
Ping had this concept of an iron with a light head and a short/stiff shaft for control. Now that Karsten isn't around things might have changed, but mhchung might be better off to simply go with the Reg. Ping shaft. Thats what I'd do.

Promax is mikethemechanic? Are you sure? I would be careful about that G1. Apologies may be in order to Promax if it is not the case. mikethemechanic may just be someone (anyone) who has taken a dislike to Golfone. The web has a large population.

Regardless of what people say the shaft is not the engine of the club, the golfer is. That is why some people need X or stiff over Reg. The golfer has a bigger engine.

The general information you provided on shafts is drivel. You are under contract not to say much? Chance would be a fine thing.

I remember reading about Aerotech shafts some time ago, so I too have that privilege. It's called Internet Explorer (thanks Bill).

I went to greatgolfdomain and read the thread 'promax advice'. Your replies were childish, offensive nonsense and anyone considering taking your advice should read that thread so they can understand your character.

GGD is now a ghost town with hardly anyone posting. I hope G1 doesn't ruin this forum as well.

Tapered shafts can be tipped to fit parallel hosels.

Take 3/8" off the tip and they fit snug as a bug and will be slightly stiffer.
