  • loft and lie etc.

how are proper loft and lie angles determined. for that matter how is wrist to floor seen as the proper gauge for clublength. Are club lengths measured from sole to griptip? I want my next purchase to be as close to right as I can get. Do I choose a brand or brands, and proceed to the swing machine/retailer. To a club builder, PGA pro at my club. Permission has been granted by my lovely business mgr. to make the purchase, but she doesn't understand the cost of being properly fitted. It is obvious that I don't either. Thanks all...Jim

The club is placed in address position. Then, a protractor is held up to the face for loft, and against the shaft for lie. Granted, there are machines (loft and lie machines) that measure this for you.

It's a starting point. If we all swung the same, then it would be foolproof. Well, ok, we'd all have to be the same size, too.

They are for MOI and balance point. Otherwise, they're measured from ground to grip cap.

There are two ways to do it. The first method is to pick your heads and shafts, take them to a club builder, and tell him/her how you want your clubs built. The other way is to see a club fitter, go through the process, pick something from the lines he carries, and have them built. The PGA pro at your club may know a lot about the swing, but squat about the gear (that seems to be the case with the local pro here). Make sure the clubbuilder has a loft/lie machine - otherwise the length of your clubs has to be altered to make up for the stock lie.

There's a belief held by some clubmakers that properly fitted clubs would make a huge difference to a rookie golfer. As they get better, they get their gear adjusted. But even Tiger's dad has said that the one thing he always did for Tiger (even at 2 years old) was make sure Tiger had equipment that fit him.

Hello, If your going to buy a new set of clubs, most pro shop will custom fit you for free!! The problem is most people don't ask. Shop around and find a set that comes with a free fitting.
