Im thinking about building another set of irons, anyone playing or have any experience with the SMT irons? What do you think?

The irons are built just like the Durometer wedges (read milled faces for extra junk). They're soles are thinner than GI irons. They blend perfectly from CB1 to CB2 to MB.

Enjoy trying them out!

you seem to know your irons, can you tell me what irons ar closest to ping g5 and are they any good, i still play with ping k1s had them 30 years.

Hi Bill - do you mean what in the whole wide world, or what in the component industry?

If you don't mind clones, Dynacraft makes the PC3 and PC3+ lines (G2 clones), and there's the P5G line (serious G5 lookalikes). My mother has been dying for PINGs, so I built her a set of P5G's. Happy as a pig in mud. Now, a girlfriend of hers hit the P5G next to the G5s - and the G5s were longer - even with the same lofts.

In the world of components, I haven't looked much into what makes the G5's the G5's. However, I've put the Innovex (www.innovexgolf.com) up against G2's, and they hold their own weight. The main difference is sole width - with the G2's having a ton of sole.

You may find the new Wishon 560's compare to the G5, now that I think about it.

I play the CB2 coupled with the Durometer wedges.
I built a set of CB1 for a friend and he loves them.
I'll be building myself a set of MBs very soon.

I find them every bit as good as my last set of forged irons (which were the seriously good Maruman Conductor Pro blades).

You won't regret buying SMT.

Truly a nice set of heads. Forged blades for only $22.00 a head isn't bad either.

I've been staring at my demo heads, and am really torn as to whether or not to shaft 'em up. I've got a CB1 5 iron, a CB2 7 iron, and an MB 9 iron.

They suuuuuuuure air purty, hyuk.

But they're cast, not forged. Soft 303 stainless, though, makes 'em bend like they're forged. And the faces on the irons are CNC milled, just like their Durometer wedges (which I used to back a ball up 3 feet yesterday, en route to winning my flight in the Club Championship).

Yep, they put some serious spin on the ball, so much so that I have pulled the ball back off of the green on ocassion.

have you heard of "tour golf clubs" usa, thay make a "z tour 3+" thats a ping i3+ clone, was thinking of buying them if there not to bad any help or advive much a appreciared, or if any one else knows what there like let me know.

The first set of clubs I ever built was their Nike Pro Combo clones, shafted with TT DGS R300's.

The worst set of clubs I ever built, but loved them. I tip trimmed arbitrarily, didn't weigh the heads, didn't swingweight them, nothing.

A decent company - I think Jeff Jackson is still with him (the man is a clubmaking guru).

Hello Bill,

Just remember, no matter who you go with, make sure to get the clubs bent to spec. Even if you don't get them fitted, get them bent to their specs (most likely available on the makers' website). Most places that bend give you 3 or 6 months to play with them, and are willing to tweak for free in that window (I haven't figured out for myself whether or not to go 3 months or 6. 6 here is pretty much the whole season!)

i am 5"8 and everything is pretty much standard with me, i have been club fitted with my old pings and it was black lie and standard grips, but i am not sure as to what shaft to pick. i have a good friend that does a lot of repairs and regripping and he tweeks clubs a bit and says my old pings are fine as the ball marks across the groves and not up to the side's, and also the marks on base off the clubs show i am hitting the ground with base square. so a standard set up seems to fit me ok, i did do a web fit on "tour gold turbo power" and it gave me a standard set up.
also said i need a stiff to med shaft, with middle bend point.
i dont know to much about shafts so any help as to how to pick would be a help.

Hi Bill,

Thank you for the kind words.

As for shafts, it's largely dependent on your carry distance. What club do you use from 150 to hit the middle of the green 8/10 times? I don't need to know about the nuked 8 iron, or how you seem to thin your 7 and it gets there. What do you carry 150 yards? For me, it's a 6 iron. I play stiff shafts in my irons. All 'web fitting' suggest I play regular or firm (halfway between reg and stiff), but I also put a premium on control with irons.

The other consideration for irons is how you swing. The smoother you swing, the weaker the flex you can use. If you've got an aggressive transition (if you like to really go after the ball), you should go stiffer.
