  • Longer Driver - Distance versus Accuracy

My driver currently has a Gramman TP440 stiff shaft with 3.5 torque. I hit my driver well and consistently put the ball down the middle of the fairway or within 10 - 15 yard of center. I have a Fujikura E360 S flex 335 tip with 3.7 torque shaft on the way. I am thinking about going a little longer with my new shaft to try for more distance and I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on this. How much longer should I go? How much would an extra inch or two in length affect my distance and accuracy? What role could the extra .2 torque play in all of this? If anyone can help me, please do.

    Thanks
    Jodie

Re: Longer Driver - Distance versus Accuracy

i have heard 1" adds 6mph to the swing and you get about 2.2 yds per mph (if hit correctly) so thats 13.2extra yds....

i never understood peoples beef with longer shafts. USGA allows 48" so that is what i have. if i were to need the acuracy i could always choke down on it 3 inches to the norm 45". but i never need to.

i don't see how it affects acuarcy. your swing plane might be a little flatter adding more sidespin on an off, hit, but that is all i see. you can get an off center hit just as easily with a 45" than a 48".

i don't think that little bit of torque change would make a differnce.

only problem is you can't get a regular shaft that long you have to get a long driver shaft cut down. they usually come no more flexable than xstiff. which i think you can handle since i think i read you have driven 397 before.

another down side for me..... i have to take my driver out of my bag before putting my clubs in my trunk becuase that club is too long lol

getting the proper flex shaft in my driver that has me hitting almost every fairway(no trees or water since) and averaging around 320 yards.
that's from a previous post , you average 320 yards and straight what do you need a longer shaft for, you can do that in thin Canadian air mmmm. i think maybe a new measuring devise is what you should be looking for because i think yours is a bit off lol.

lgskywalker37 - The 397 yard drive was a one time thing. I guess you would call it a personal best that I may never achieve again. Or maybe I will. My average is 320. My current shaft is 44" while the new one is 46". I guess the thing I was wondering about is, should I go from stiff to x stiff with the extra 2 inches or will it make a difference?

Wildwilly911 - My 320 yard average has a whole lot to do with my brother. If you have any brothers, you'll know how competition can build between yous. Driving is about the only thing in golf that I can do as well as him so I strive to drive as far as I can. If I can outdrive him 2 or 3 times a round, my game has been a success, no matter the score. LOL. If an extra 2 inches on my shaft can add 10, 15 or even 20 yards to my drive, that might give me the edge I need to crank a few past his new Titleist 905R.

Re: Longer Driver - Distance versus Accuracy

i think anyone that can carry a drive 280+ should be xstiff, so i would if i were you.......

now if you can carry 320 with a a 44", i would definatly go xstiff with a stiff tip and a 46". that is just my personal opinion, other might disagee. kick point and brand name makes a differnce too.

i personally like the graffalloy blue ld. i have a xstiff tip low kick point 48" and i can only carry it 280, but i am not even loading the shaft and hitting it that far. when i actually load the shaft i can get further but it takes too much strength and effort so i like to just swing a long shaft and get easy distance and accuray instead of trying to swing so hard and hitting wild and wearing myself out. my 3W carries 240 so i am happy with the 40 yds extra i get from 3w to D.

The shaft I'm thinking of putting in my driver I actually won on another golf forum site. It's a Fujikura E360 Stiff flex, 335 tip, mid flexpoint with medium tipstiffness.

just my opinion.... but with your distnaces, i wouldn't go too long of a shaft if you can only get it stiff.
