workability on club heads

Hi,

Think I will take the advice given to me and get a set of irons custom made. Luckly the only PCS registered clubfitter in Ireland lives around 30 mins away, and I went and had a good chat with him. it was €60 for a 2 hour fitting session, and worth it just to get the info from the end.

Would getting an iron head with higher workability (which I found out, correct me if I am wrong, determins how much you can shape a shot) be detrimental to a beginner/novice.

Also, since it seems a lot of advice is to get clubs custom built, why isn't everyone doing it? (except Pros, who are tied into sponsorship deals).

As far as I'm concerned, once we get hitting the ball straight, then we can think about working the ball.

Seriously, I'd go for a big cavity back iron - something designed to keep more balls straight, and more distance from missing the center.

Lack of education, pure and simple. A lot of golfers simply haven't been educated that they're better off with custom fit clubs. They don't have to be custom built, necessarily (if you have a favourite set heads, a reshaft works).

I have yet to hear a golfer get custom fit clubs and go 'these just aren't working as good as my 'off the shelf' clubs.

I had been looking at getting some Snake Eyes Viper Ti-Steels, this these would fit that description?

Those'll work, yep. I play the 600XC's, myself. I don't know why they're rated 'high workability' - they go pretty straight for me.

I vote this section of the forum get renamed to "ask lowpost"

what's the difference in the levels of trajectory shown on heads? Medium would be standard degree angles, with max being a couple of degrees more and min being couple degrees less than standard?

eg. a club that has a medium rating would be 40º, same number club with a maximum rating might be 42º, and same club number with minimum rating might be 38º

The trajectory shown on the heads is not the loft but the trajectory of the ball when hit with these irons.

A 9 iron from a high trajectory set will have the same loft as a 9 iron from a low trajectory set, but the difference in the location of the center of gravity will mean that the ball flight is different.

A good Q, jomo - on I hadn't paid any attention to. It could very well be, but I think bloodredsun has the answer. It's primarily about the location of the vertical center of gravity (followed by the location of the 'z axis' COG). The 600XC's will hit the ball higher than the Viper Ti Steels, and both will hit the ball higher than, say SMT 303MBs.

I would also follow lowpost and go with the cavity back irons. You should realize that you still can shape shots with those irons. (may not be as easy, but you also will not be penalized for not hitting the exact center of the club head every time)

As for why more people do not get custom fitted sets? it is primarily the advertising blitz of the major golf manufacturers. golfers are convinced that the well known equipment is better. The fact that a golfer thinks that he is playing the same clubs that a well known pro is playing and that everyone knows that brand carries a lot of weight. Why Nike pays Tiger a ton of money, Why Callaway pays Phil a ton of money.

Also all the pros are playing custom sets. That is why every manufacturer who wants pros to play their equipment has to have a tour van at every tournement. If a pro wants a specefic shaft, loft whatever, they custom build it for him. That is why even the lesser known players play that equipment as well. It's free, custom made and able to be tested right on site.
