    Re: Cut Down Driver

In my understanding, in modern (2004+) graphite shafts, tip trimming doesn't change flex as much as it simply stiffens the tip.

      hi ben
will be shortening shaft at butt end
ive been to the range tonight and marked up the grip so i was choking down by 1.1/2" and m shots were all straight or a very slight fade.

        No idea

I am of the understanding that if you take the inch from the bottom of the shaft (towards the club head), it will cause the shaft to play more stiff. But cutting it from the butt end should not.

I have no idea what shaft your cutting down and wether your problem deals with the length of the driver or that the current shaft is playing to soft for your swing. I have played with a shaft that is too soft and can tell you that it is very hard to control your shots even when you hit the center of the clubhead. But if you have hit the club when choked down then I think you will be ok by trimming it from the Butt end.

Ian, I think that you could overcome the idea of cutting the shaft by working on the overall height of your body in the setup. Think about it. The more your body is upright ( not removing the spine angle, knee flex, etc), the more the clubshaft will be able to work the plane. My idea here is that with an improved arc and take away this should then give you a sweeter strike and direction. Maybe im wrong

As for getting it to sqaure? That an indian thing, not the arrow.
Probably only a half flex for 1.5" of the butt. The more flexible the shaft the more it will stiffen up (increase CPM) from a butt trim.

hi there what is CPM? it is a taylormade/fujikura re*ax regular 65gr shaft
marked off 1.5" on grip and choked down to that point was hitting ball tons better

CPM: Cycles Per Minute. 60CPM = 1 Hz (IIRC). But that doesn't matter.

Slats, the other thing you can try is lopping off that 1.5", and play it that way. See how it is. If you need to add more weight, or put length back, it's completely doable.

                    im going for it!
if i dont do anything the club is redundant anyway.
performed a lot better when choking down
i trust the club fitter to do it right and put it back to how it was if it doesnt work.
                    thanks for the feedback
P.S this is how you get when you are a greedy ba***rd! im getting 200yds+ and straight with my 3 wood

Good Luck, let us know how it turns out.

Didn't Tiger use a 43.5 or 44 inch driver a few years back? (prior to the Nike days) I personally do not see it as a sign of a poor swing, I think that certain people like and control the shorter shaft better.

Nothing like having confidence in a club.

He did it while swinging Nike gear.

It was JB and Camillo and Bubba that got him going back to a longer driver.

Let us know how it works out, slats!

                              hi ben and ogallalabob
ive been to the range tonight and first impressions are favourable.
i hit driver 10 or 12 times over the session and managed 200yds easily and most were slight draws the one where my tempo got out of shape ended up fading slightly.
now this was off the cra**y rubber tees that you get at the range so tee height was less than i prefer.
in summary shortening the shaft has not had a detrimental effect

                                hey lowpost/ogallalabob
played 2 rounds this weekend and the driver was working well majority of shots were straight and some were fades.
it does feel a little light though.
i am going to move the weights to the max draw settings and see how that works, other than that how would i get the weight back on?
distance was fine had a yardage book and i was averaging 240/250yds
