  • Grip Change with Air Compressor

I bought a used sandwedge last year and the grip on it was terribly slick. A couple years ago I reshafted and gripped some clubs of mine...waste of money for those ****py heads. Anyway...
So I have these good grips on these clubs that are just sitting there, not being used. Read a few things on using an aircompressor to change grips so I thought I'd give it a try.

I was very suprised at how easy this was.

The first burst of air I gave it, I realized why you should use a tube over the grip. Very suprised at how elastic those things are, almost ruined the grip. With a tube, not a problem.

    Here's what I did.

    Needed:
    Air compressor with 70-90psi.
Small inflatables attachment for air compressor.
Tube to put over grip to prevent excessive stretching.

    Steps Removal:
    Put tube over grip.
Put inflatable attachment in drain hole of grip.
Apply air. I used short bursts to keep damage to the grip at a minimum.
Grip will pop loose. Sometimes with a loud pop. Then while applying air slide grip off of club.

    Steps Installation.
No need for tube on this part.
Get grip started on club. Quarter to half inch is fine.
Apply air to grip and push on to club. Should slide on very easy.
To align grip, apply more air and twist.

I'm sure some of the people that do this all the time have a little better way to do it, but I just couldn't find step by step instructions anywhere.

I've posted instructions here a couple times... use the search feature.

More or less, you've got the method. (After having a grip blow up and taking a chip out of my workbench, I quickly got a tube. Well, two tubes. And a half tube.)

The other thing you may want to do in the future (in case you're doing clubs that have grips that WEREN'T installed with air):

Take some grip solvent and squirt it in the vent cap. You may need to use a common nail (or other slim pointy object) to break the tape at the butt end. This grip solvent helps to reactivate the tape (so I'm told) and provides some lubrication for the grip to slide off.

Using the above, I managed to take an OEM belly putter grip off a Ping Craz-e B. It took some doing (some serious twisting with the air gun at full pop), but it came off!

You'll never mess around with 2 sided tape and solvent again!

The grip I removed was put on the traditional method. I ruined one grip because it stretched to much, but I didn't have and grip solvent.

You could probably use mineral spirits in a pinch.
