  • Lowpost, and others: The SMT option...

Whilst idly digging around in threads, I saw a reference to SMT components, and the idea slowly started to percolate about buying components, getting totally custom clubs, and getting them fitted to me from the "Go" square.

    So...

    (a) Good idea, or nonsense?
    (b) I live in Bath, UK (or as near as damnit) - can anyone suggest who could build them for me? My local pro is no problem to build the clubs, but I believe doesn't have any fancy-pants stuff like launch monitors, etc
    (c) Components? Which? ie; that are available in UK. Or should I just go ahead and order from someone like SMT and import the bits myself?

This is just pie in the sky at the moment - I'm just kicking ideas around, but it's always fun to dream, and fun to play with options

    Cheers all

BTW, the acronym SMT will always and only mean Senior Management Team to me.

    Sorry.

    That's just how it is...

So their components for irons are Tom Wishon, Snake Eyes and Golfsmith. Any thoughts?

Boy, you hardly let a fella get a word in edgewise!

I like components. They're cheaper than OEMs, perform just as well, and are just begging to be custom fit.

SMT (superior metal technology) has customer service and a lifetime warranty that is second to none.

Tom Wishon Golf Technology is a list of Wishon builders.

I'm pretty sure GolfSmith has a European distributorship - they make some decent stuff (I played their Snake Eyes 600XC irons last year).

The SMT Spectrum was the first component driver I ever had - shafted it up with an AccuFLEX Evolution.

My bag is currently owned by Wishon stuff - a 949mc driver, 515 and 949 fairway woods, the 560 irons (forged, low offset cavity back irons), and their CX Micro wedges.

You're headed down the right path (custom fitting), but are already flirting with the darkside... (clubmaking).

            Hi Bulldog

I've looked into this from time to time myself -have a look at this site.

            Custom Built Golf Clubs

Bath to Cheltenham can only be an hour so.

For more information there's the Professional Clubmakers Society.

OK, I digress, can anyone tell me why components are impossible to obtain in the UK ? I have built several sets for friends, but in each instance had components shipped from US or Canada.

My first guess is that most component creators are based in the States. I'm only aware of 1 Canadian company (Ashton) and they were just purchased by an American company.

GolfSmith is the only component (and clubmaking) supplier that I'm aware of that has crossed the pond. SMT might have a master distributor in Europe (they do in Australia, IIRC).

Hi, low post, you do have another Canadian company supplying components, customclubshop.com. I have dealt with them and found them them very good.Golfsmith will only deal with club pros. or similiar .I opened an account with them when they first started in Europe, I reckon they were anxious to create as much business as possible and welcomed all.

Don't get me wrong - there's quite a few Canadian suppliers, but few (if now no) Canadian manufacturers/desingers (I realise virtually all manufacturing is done in Chinese foundries).

The boys at CCS are very good - I hope they continue to be so as Cliff has moved on to other things.

I still love MyClubMaker - Custom Golf Components. - Bryant is top notch, and Tim at myOstrich Golf is highly knowledgeable; and both have fantastic customer service, and will ship overseas.
