getting fitted for a putter

looking at various articles/videos, i think my current putter is too long and may not suit my putting swing.
so where would you suggest i go to get a decent putter fitting service?
any help would be appreciated.

I'd start by cutting down your putter if you think it's too long.

Your arms should be hanging comfortably, and your eyes over the ball.

In other words - you should look like Tiger Woods when you setup to a putt.

Let your hands slide along the shaft until you're in this position. Mark, cut, and regrip!

lowpost, according to the info i have been looking at , they don't recommend this action, as it messes up the characteristics. is that just to get you to buy a new putter?

I'd be asking what characteristics it messes up.

For certian, the following will be effected:

The following will be lesser or lighter:

Total weight
Length
Swingweight
MOI
The lie angle will get dynamically flatter (unless you bend over more).

The following will be unaffected:

Loft


Swingweight/MOI can be increased by adding weight back to the head, and total weight can be increased by adding weight anywhere.

I tell you, if your putter fits your posture better, you'll start dropping more putts and you'll care less about the characteristics!

been onto the oddyssey putter web site , and went through their fitting process. they have suggested 3 putters i should try. went to see my club pro , and he is about to take delivery of 3 doz oddyssey putters. so hopefully i can try all 3 and see if any work for me. he also said they come as 34 or 35 inch standard but he can fit if needed. only question i have is .... if oddyssey sell putters in 32. 33, 34, 35 inch lengths. what difference would the 33 be to a 35 cut down 2 inches.i am going to ask my pro this on wed, so any info in advance of this would be welcome.

All other things being equal, whether the putter comes at 33" or is cut down to 33" makes no difference.

In other words, if the raw shaft, grip and head weights on the 33" and 35" are identical, then cutting the 35" down to 33" will produce a putter identical to the prefab 33".

What are the differences between the 33" and the 35" prefab? It's all detailed above - the 33" will weigh less with a lighter swingweight.

I had this very question too. I am already short 5'7" and I bend a lot over my putts. If I were to cut my putter off so that held the grip by the end of the grip I would be cutting off about 4 inches on my 33" putter!

As it is I hold the putter on the lower end of the grip about 1/4 down the shaft with my fingers on the steel shaft.

Will it still be okay to cut that much off? I mean, I like the idea of doing it myself but am not confident in doing it since that will make my putter about 29 inches long. with that much off will aything other than weight be affected?

Hey TD,

All the same things will apply to your putter shortening as Bruin's. All the weight related things will decrease.

The lie will get dynamically flatter.

But you may find you're a better putter with it. You could try nibbling it down, too, until you find something comfortable.

I added a fat grip to mine because I felt my wrists always would hinge or "break" helping to cause my putting woes. It even said on the website that it would change the swing weight but I don't find it a big deal as I am sinking more putts.

I'd say try atleast cutting it down instead of buying a new putter because I don't think it will change anything that much, yes the putter will be lighter but it should fit you better. Unless you are trying to sell your putter and get a new one I'd say save yourself some money and just try cutting it down like Lowpost said.

I was at a buddy's place, and he had the Royal Crown Jumbo on this little tiny putter - I couldn't believe how great it felt!

My other buddy and I went to play putt putt at Disney, and he grabbed up the shorty with the Jumbo. He shot 2 under on the real course. He's since gone on to putt the lights out with this thing.

I've since ordered two. Can't wait to try them out! They just fill your hands so nicely...

Yeah I have the SuperStroke grip that K.J. Choi uses. Everyone makes fun of me when they first see it but then they give it a try and are always amazed at how great it feels. It definitely has helped me keep my wrists from breaking, when I go back to a conventional grip the feel is completely different. My putting has without a doubt improved since I bought it, I'd advise anyone who's having issues with their putting to give a jumbo grip a try.
