  • Lee Trevino

I was at the 1984 open champianship at St Andrews.I was lucky enough to get under the ropes onto the 17th fairway during the practise round.Lee was about to hit his iron shot to the green. All of a sudden the concierge of the Old course hotel came running over.He was in full uniform, and said"Mr Trevino, Mr McAlpine wants to meet you".Trevino said"I am playing golf,if he wants to meet me ,see me in the clubhouse".
"But its "Sir" Mr McAlpine".".Whos he?" Says Trevino.....Concierge "he's the famous builder,he built that hotel"..".He built that hotel"...Trevino shouted,"tell him i dont want to meet him,and if i hit it enough times i hope i knock it down".The concierge stood there stunned, while trevino hit the 3 iron to about 5 ft next to the pin.Unfortunately,i was the only spectator there, but i can share the experience with all of you.

Nice story... But it's hard to understand why anyone would disturb a professional golfer while at work. There is a proper way for everything and good timing is part of that...

Well perhaps McAlpine thought as others did that Trevino was the joker, and would have accepted. But i have watched Trevino a few times ,he is a pure professional when actually doing his job.On the tee he jokes with the crowd, but once over the shot he is deadly serious.
He was one of my idols, and he once said that he was the only player on tour, who swung the club,"sq to sq".
He maintained where ever the back of the left hand faced at impact, thats where the ball would go.I always followed that, and tried to maintain that position as long as possible towards the target, after impact.
I owe alot of my 'early good golf to him, getting down to a 5 handicap.

      cheers

Very interesting... I heard he also contributes heavily towards children's hospitals... Trevino certainly deserves his Hall of Fame status... he is one of golf's giants.
