  • Killer Rough

I am a member of an east of England club. This year the ground staff have fed the short rough and narrowed the fairways. This has made any shot just off the fairway a nightmare, if you can find the ball in the 2 1/2 inches of tight bristles they call grass!! I have a handicap in the late teens and find that I am playing percentage shots as anything a little daring is punished. Any body having similar problems at their course. Keeps you thinking though.

Thought you may be interested, at a previous course I was assistant pro at they did much the same one year in particular. The course was a very hilly one and they brought the rough right the way in and tried making the fairways with the rough carving in more at certain points. Whilst this looked lovely to the eye it ceratinly made you think about taking out the driver on every hole. What they failed to predict was that the members medal rounds on the weekend did not take there normal 3-4 hours, but were now in some cases over 5 hours long. So many people were loosing their golf balls it slowed everyting right down. There were a few complaints to say the least. Try and look at it as a positive - your accuracy should improve

To me, even scrub and brush not OB should be cut down - it's hacks that are losing their balls in there... not good players. I think THAT'S the main reason for slow play
