  • Muirfield. the open 213

    hi
having heard the the open is again returning to Muirfield in Gullane i went down there this morning and took a walk round the course.
They have already put in 4 new tees on the 9th, the 14th, 15th and the 17th.
i paced it out and i take it its about 75 yards longer than it was in 2002 when E. Ells won the claret jug.
there seems to be no other work going on as yet but the course looks in wonderful condition.
i have been lucky to play there twice but never broke 85.
Mizunoman wrote a wonderful review of the course back in 2004 for GTO well worth a look if your interested in muirfield.
i take it that Nother Berwick, Gullane no1, Luffness and Dunbar East will all be used again for the qualiffing rounds for the open.
if you want to try some wonderful links golf then come to East Lothian and try any of the 5 above and there are another 9 links courses within 15 minuets of Muirfield.
    cheers
    Bill

    Re: Muirfield. the open 213

All I can remember about Muirfield is that in spite of the club secretary from Royal Troon calling Muirfield in an attempt to arrange a tee time for my brother and I Muirfield for whatever reason wouldn't accomodate us.
And hi Bill,,,my user name on a previous website was " buteman " I don't know if you recall that user name.
So Muirfield is the only Open course in Scotland that I haven't played ( maybe one day ) I did find Royal Troon from the member tees most enjoyable and playable.
Where do you play your golf Bill ? I'm replacing all my equipment heading into the new season, I go for a fitting next week with the Ping people,,,I played one round last Summer with the G20 irons,,,beautiful clubs, so perhaps they shall end up in my bag.
This has not influenced me in any way but three members of my club changed last Spring to custom fitted Ping's, one of the guys is still ranting about how good the G20's are,,he says they have helped him shave an average of 3-4 strokes per round off his score.
I asked one of the other guys in our senior mens league who also had the new G20's his opinion, and he said " best move I have made in forty years of golf " so perhaps there is some benefit to custom fitting after all.

    All the best from B.C.
