  • Finger hurts between the knuckles

Has anyone dealt with pain in the finger- not the joints but between the joints. I am a righty and for about the last six months have felt pain in my right hand in the ring and middle finger, in the area between the knuckles and the first joint. The joints are ok. I stopped for about two weeks and have taken it easy for what I think is long enough for any muscles to heal. Torn tendon? Would a larger grip help? Any overwrap to put on while playing?

Had the same problem. The larger Winn grips helped but the biggest changed came from altering my swing. My divots were more like pork chops than bacon strips. By improving my balance, my divots became shallower and my finger pain (exactly as you described) went away.

      Pal,

I have the exact same problem, I have had this pain for about 2 years now. I recently changed from standard to midsize grips & found my grip pressure became alot less & the pain is not as bad. I have always thought it was because I used an interlocking grip.

I have seen a physio about this & he said its just getting a bit tender when I play golf & I'm not really doing any harm. Though I find it very hard to play 2 or 3 days in a row (when the oppourtunity arises!).

My advice is to get larger grips, grip the club lighter & ice your hand after rounds / practicing.

      Good Luck

        Hi bhh,

What mriff and kingfinbar say may be right on the mark. It may be tendinitis caused by the shock by the strike extending to the finger joints.

I had the problem years ago, and had pains in the fingers, wrists, elbows and other joints. Unfortunately, I could not go for those oversized grips which they recommend for arthritis cases, because of my short fingers, and in fact I started to make the already thinnest grips available even thinner, by stretching them during installation. That allowed me to make me grip the club lighter in my fingers, and still have a secure grip. Speaking about the grip, I found I did not have a proper grip, and really worked hard in making it right. I was holding the grip of the club in my palms, instead of the base of the fingers and under the base of the thumb pad. With this grip, I had to really hold on tight with the fingers, as in various positions of the swing I would feel the hands were losing control and would be coming off the grip. I had previously thought that pain was part of the game, until I made the proper grip, which had the hands working properly and not fighting each other, and also in synch with the other swing actions.

I also went for the graphite shafts in all my clubs, when they originally came out, as I read that they were a lot easier re vibration and shock transference to the muscles and joints, particularly if you wanted to practice and play a lot.

My pains have all gone away, and I don't know if it's a remission of arthritis symptoms, or it was just tendinitis before, or the above changes, or a combination.
