  • how do you guys deal with it?

    4,4,9,4,4,4,9,6,3,4,6,3,4,7,7,4,6,3

that was the result of a 4hr 40min slog round my course, 10 pars should have seen me clean up at todays tri-major but played 4 holes appallingly (+15), playing a number of disasterous shots after excruciatingly long waits to play my next shot

wouldnt mind but i was only playing in a 2ball

as slow play is a constant problem at my course may be looking for a new home next year unless i can learn to deal with it

so how do you guys cope with slow play?

A pre-shot routine on every shot till you putt out. You, and no one else in this world can focus strictly on their golf game for 4-6 hours. Distractions are part of the game. Slow play is just another distraction. So, once, what ever is slowing you down, or other wise distracting you is over and it is your turn to hit, your pre-shot routine is the starting point for your next shot. It's a way of not letting things bother you between shots. I have also been hearing (reading) a lot about "post" shot routines. After the shot is over, it is over, and there not much you can do about it, good, bad, or indifferent. Your post shot routine is your way of clearing your head, while getting mentally geared up for your next shot, which of course starts with your pre- shot routine. GJS

      Hi Slats,

Slow play has been a problem since Adam was a boy. I hate it and find it very frustrating.

I have come to the conclusion that it will always be a problem. So why concern myself.

This is the girly in me but I tend to look at the scenary, talk to the playing partners, and have recently started doing the ol suduko between shots.

So why the blow outs anyway - how is the course management big fella.

Slow play is nothing new but people blowing up because of it has become more common in recent years. I think way too many guys arrive at the course thinking they will only be 4 hours in total, including gearing up and down at the start and the end and a refreshment in the clubhouse. When things get slow then they get agitated thinking about being home a bit later and copping it from the missus. Simple solution? Play at the first time of the day on your own and then it takes as long as you want it to.

Hagen said it best....stop and smell the flowers, you should only be thinking about the shot and the score over the ball. From the second the club goes back into the bag you should be back to football, politics, dirty jokes, last nights TV, anything else you can think of to get you out of the moment. Dont just treat your round as a game of golf with rigid criteria on whether or not you enjoy it, approach it as a social event, a chance to shoot the sh*t with your friends, to appreciate being out in the fresh air.

Anyone who plays higher level competitive stuff has to be able to deal with a 5 hour (thats right, 5) round from time to time.

A friend of mines once said "I dont care how long it takes me to play a game of golf, after all it's leisure time and I've already paid, the only game I like to play quick is Snooker, because you pay for that by the hour"

It's better being over the turf than under it (or I think it is )

            hi
slow play let me fill in my note book about how i played the hole i just finished. i also mark where i hit the ball and the kind of second shot i had.
i think when stuck behind someothers that are slow then you just manage it like you do with the course. it down to control. control of your temper and slow down when walking up to your ball and look at the diffrent kinds of shot you can hit as you walk to the ball.
i find that i often play better when behind someone slowed in front so it don't really bother me a lot.
            cheers
            Bill

              Hi Slats,

Rubbish golf mate I must say........lol

It can be a problem, not usually this time of year though, I simply slow up myself well before I get to them, once you see it slowing then slow down yourself.

What tends to happen is you see it slow up in front so the group behind speed up so they can moan about it, and stand there leaning on clubs for what ever reason...........simple! they come so preoccupied by the group in front their own game goes.

Walk a bit slower and take a touch longer before you play thats what I say.
