  • Just say no...

    ...to scorecards. Lately I've been leaving the scorecard behind and just keeping a mental tab of how many strokes I am up or down from par. The change in my game is amazing. Even though I am still, technically, keeping score, without the card in hand I am 100% more relaxed. It's easy to "turn off" in between shots, not take every swing so d****d seriously, etc.
    Has anyone else experienced this? Sure makes the game more enjoyable!

    I've tried only record holes with pars or better. Disregard bogeys or anything worse than that. After 2 rounds, I played much better with confidence and enjoyment.

      Hi Clay,

      Although I agree somehow writing down a bad score seems to hurt more because you gaze at it and start questioning your ability then it's all down hill.

      Unfortunatley you will have to carry one in a competition, but there is another way to play with a scorecard which helps..................play against the stroke index, this way you play against the course......if you say play off 18 you have a shot on every hole, so every time you par one it's a birdie and a double bogie is only a bogie which you can pull back with a par.

      Give it a go it works.

      Ian.

        Thanks, Ian, I'll try that. Really what I think helps me is to not have a scorecard to look at or fret about. It's easier for me to just play each shot if I'm not concerning myself with what I HAVE to do to get the score I think I should be able to get. That last two 18s I've played, I've only had one double bogey, no triples and 6 pars. That never happens when I'm thinking about the score instead of the shot. It's just a way of me to train myself to relax my thought processes between shots and to focus in on the job at hand when it's time set up & swing. Hopefully, I'll be able to take some confidence from this into my next league round on Monday.

          Rather than putting down your number of strokes per hole, I suggest that you apply the following formula to your score and enter it for each hole.

          Score = ((HB x (T+H))/33) * square root SI

          where HB = number of times you hit the ball : T = temperature on the green : H = humidity on the tee : SI = stroke index of the hole.

          At the end of your round, total your value for each hole and divide by the pro’s age multiplied by the height above sea level (in metres) of the clubhouse.

          You will, of course, need to carry a laptop computer and miniature weather station and altimeter. However, don’t despair, as to get this lot in your golf bag will mean discarding several clubs thus making club selection less taxing and saving on mental anxiety.

          I think that after doing all this, if you have not lost the will to live, you won’t really care if you played well or not.
