Check P90X from Google. (Videos are good, but check the schedule). The variation and progression of program is the best part. You can just copy the idea and use your own exercises:-)

      Re: Getting fit for golf.

      Hi all,

I am new to the forum but was very interested in all the comments about getting fit for golf. My experiences with training golfers has been as a fitness and Pilates personal trainer for more than 20 years. I have found that an overall programme that covers stability, mobility, strength and flexibility works best. Although a strength based programme will help with superficial muscles, it is necessary to work from the inside out, a great golf swing starts with a stable base. A balanced body is the answer. An efficient set of postural muscles is the key. My clients respond exceptionally well to a Pilates based programme that includes equipment and mat based exercises. Working to stabilise shoulder and pelvic girdle along with deep abdominal work has proved a succcess, not only do they say they are using less effort to get a better result, they are finishing the game as fresh as they started.

I´ve done too little Pilates to really know anything, but... think it's good for knowing - feeling your postures. Very important in golf!

I would not do only Pilates - it's not good for fast movements. Rule in exercise is "What You Do, Is What You Get". To hit longer you need to hit balls... harder. (If you really want to hit them long.) If you want to keep them on the fairway, and play long enough... maybe Pilates is enough.

I mean it can be tough ... I have not seen sessions that are done explosively - It more tough on deep muscles that control your posture.

          Hi Hannu

I agree, for a well rounded fitness programme you need variety. I regard Pilates as the neutraliser for all the repetitive behaviours in golf that compound existing postural issues and possibly create new ones.

If a player has fundamental postural issues such as round shoulders, or a lack of stability this will directly effect his/her play - until those underlying issues are addressed progress will be limited.

Of course sports specific drills and training are needed but with a sound posture related programme which can take benefits back to the golf specific drills its a win win situation.

            Re: Getting fit for golf.

Lately I have been doing more and more stretching. (Which means that you also need more stability and muscle control to hold your posture...)
I'm over 50 and my pelvis, hip and lower back just isn't what it used to be.

I don't like to go to instructed groups that is why I like video instructions... With Pilater you need a good instructor to get you started. It's all about doing it right - not so much doing it maximum stregth. I do not know if video instruction are good enough for starting Pilates. (Maybe you can? If the instructions are good enough and you have someone how checks that you are not bluffing...)

A great tool I have been using lately is the television game / program Wii Fit.

I have been doing Wii Fit Yoga whenever I have some spare time (usually in the morning)

The one piece of equipment that I have found the most useful is a kettlebell. You can do a ton of different routines that really strengthen your core, shoulders and just about every muscle group. I have a 25LB kettlebell, and believe me its plenty big. I noticed that my drives not only increased, but my accuracy improved as well. I think because my stabilizer muscles improved as a result of using this type of low impact equipment.

I highly recomend P90X work-out.A nice blend of strength, cardio, and flexability. I think the yoga is the hardest work-out.stickwith this program and you will see results.
