  • pre-game stretch

As a new player I am finding muscles I didn't know I had.

I know that stretching before starting any physical activity lessens the chance of injury and muscle pain afterwards.

Is there a recommended set of stretches I can do before I start playing?

    Re: pre-game stretch

    Hi John,

I am quite conscience in making sure that I am very much warmed and loose before i start a round of golf. I have heard of many stories of people pulling something and creating an injury that has ended their golf career.

I firstly like to balance on the outside of both feet to make sure i loosen them so i can swing through without having to hold back.

Then i place a driver behind my lower back and rotate to each side to get them joints free.

Try selecting 2 irons simliar length eg 5 + 6. Then hold them together and make some slow practice swings, this will help the feeling when you hold 1 club and make your actual swing.

These techniques work for me but i hope they are ok for you as well.

I mainly stretch my lower back out in a variety of ways. Then i put a swing weight on my longest iron and work from a small swing to a large one. Then i'm ready to blast

I'm possibly alone here but I'd suggest a training aid like the Momentus Swing Trainer to warm up (or something similar). The extra weight stretches the muscles that you will definately use during your golf swing. Other stretches are good but I had success when I used a weighted club. My own clubs felt so light afterwards. It gave me the confidence that I could swing faster and stay in control !

I'm an old man of 71. My pre match routine is to touch my toes and stretch backwards a few times. Hold the driver with my elbows behind my waist and turn to point it backwards 90* each side. Hold the driver behind my shoulders. take my stance then point the grip then the head at an imaginary ball position. Hold each position for about 10 seconds with about 5 repeats of each stretch. Slip a weight onto my driver and do slow motion swings pausing to stretch the muscles at the top of the backswing and the follow through.

A couple years ago I did tear some laterals around my hips and abdomen so I have learned my lesson!

              Guys,

It's good to see your making an effort to warm up before playing, and it looks like you have all the right moves.

Just one point be very carefull when swinging two clubs, this exercise can lead to pulled back muscles, as I am tried and tested a few years ago.

TAKE IT SLOWLY. DON'T INJURE YOURSELF WHATEVER YOU DO! I've injured my ligaments 4 times in the past 4 years and it's painful. Ok so it didn't happen playing golf but it can happen and it will if your not careful. It's hard to get over injuries so try to prevent them. I'm currently on the 'sidelines' due to a problem with my achillies tendant. My football "career" is at a slight stand still but luckily my golf isn't affected by it ! Lucky me ehhh?

It's golf week time at my club next week and this injury has let me concentrate on whooping everyone else and hammering my h'cap ! Confidence is everything.
