  • Inner Golf!

I picked up this book on Inner Golf over the last weekend. It is by Timothy. It talks about self 1 and self 2 and how to quit self 1. And I tell you it worked like magic over the weekend. I am a 12/13 H'cap. I started birdie birdie and finished 1st 9 with one UNDER!!!. Bogied the 2nd nine for four holes - must be all the stress of shooting 1 Under and had to leave after 13th hole to take my son for Tennis. Now I am not sure if it was a fluke/just a good day/or if the "Inner Golf" stuff? Has anybody tried InnerGolf ?

    Re: Inner Golf!

I've read this book and understand the principle of self 1 and 2. I found it quite difficult to read through though.

I prefer Dr Bob Rotella's books. Fantastic. Shot 80 off the stick first round afterward reading it.

Dr' Bob's books are simplitistic, easy to comprehend and read.

    Very worthwhile.

I have browsed Rotella too. I like his stuff. But Inner Golf was straight to the point - atleast the first chapter. I was impressed with the concept of self 1 and 2. This is true with my game.

        Wow my favorate book.

        http://www.golf-tuition-online.com/g...imothy+gallwey

My old thread from two years ago when I first read it, a truly great read, many top pro talk about getting 'out of the way' and this book defines exactly what they mean.

I have said here many times hit the last 20/30 balls at the range with a completley empty head, even humming a tune works.

        Good stuff

So, this goes some way towards explaining why I seem to have better results when playing in relaxed surrounds. IE with close mates. As opposed to playing in a competition 4 ball with 3 guys I have never met before...

Self 1 is occupied talking blokey stuff (beer, sex, footy & cricket) with the mates and leaves Self 2 to get the golf game done...

          I like it...

Now, if only Self 2 could chip and putt...

            Re: Inner Golf!

I have become a believer of this stuff. It was a cold day in NJ but worth it. I had to try this inner golf stuff for 18 holes. Had a great round yesterday. Played like I knew what I was doing. Shot 82 from the gold (71.7/127). But the best part was driving long and in the middle on par 4/5 with confidence and finding the green on most par 3s.

Ive gotta get the book, but before I do could you share maybe a couple of really good tips or ideas inside of this book? Ive always believed golf is ATLEAST 70% mental, so any good tips that you might share would be helpful......thanks.

                Re: Inner Golf!

I got the book based on Ian's advice and its definitely worth it; I'm still struggling with some of the visualisation techniques but have incorporated a variation of bounce - hit (from the Inner Game of Tennis) with positive results.

Rather than me explain it check out ....

                http://www.tennis.com/yourgame/tipof....aspx?id=50076

... in the Golf book Gallwey talks about applying the technique to the swing, for example you might try "top" (of the swing) and "hit" (the ball) - for me "hit" was unhelpful as, fro the reason below, was any "golf term" so I "tick - tock" which I also find helps with rhythm.

Two things though, obviously it won't help with swing flaws (such as my driver problems ) which is why I think golf is only 90% mental once some level of competence is achieved, and you must play "bounce - hit" or equivalent in its own right to distract Self 1, once it becomes a golf drill the Self 1 takes over again.

                  Re: Inner Golf!

As far as I have read here is what I have incorporated into my game....

Try to feel the clubhead as it reaches top of the backswing; as it contacts the ball; as you finish the swing. Now have a phrase you can repeat at these three positions. I say One-And-Go. This serves couple of purposes - according to me - reminds me when backswing is complete; kicks of body to start the downswing; feel impact position; reminds me to complete swing as I say last of the phrase. It also maintains the tempo.

The idea is to keep self 1 (the one with instructions/tips) busy saying the phrase "one-And-Go" while the self 2(the one with skill) to execute the swing. Otherwise self 1 keeps telling what to do to mess up your swing.

                  Next chapter talks about awareness.

                    Re: Inner Golf!

Thats a pretty good technique, really good actually. That way self 1 is giving the instructions without getting in the way and self 2 is executing the swing. Thanks for sharing that, nice information to have and feel free to tell more.

                      Re: Inner Golf!

It's a brilliant book. Self 2 is the golfer who makes those 30 foot putts that the self 1 could never make, amongst other things.

Good resurrect - I just finished this one myself.

Fantastic concept, and I love the method for getting out of my own way.
