how do you guys deal with slow play?

i was on a hot round today until the slow pace of play got to me and i just lost my momentum.

any advice for keeping your game going when you are constantly waiting to play your shot.

Gutted Slats - was that the medal? If so, sorry it didn't work out.

I think the most important help to it is a consistent PSR. That should be the trigger that clears your mind no matter what's happened before, and sets up your round shot by shot.

That's the theory a la Rotella, anyways..!

      thanks dog
      yes it was a medal!
      gutted? too right!
got to the turn in 42 4,5,5,5,5,4,4,5,5.
got to the 10th tee where 3 old guys were putting their flasks away it then took nearly an hour to complete the next 4 holes, by that time they had lost 2 holes to the group in front and we insisted they let us through
will be grabbing a rotella publication soon

        Juggling. It focuses your mind.

            Re: momentum

Dog's onto something - something I'm learning (but struggling to practice).

It goes hand in hand with 'hit it, find it, and hit it again'.

A simple, repeatable PSR tells the mind and body that "It's time to hit a shot now". The only reason you know how long it's been since you hit a shot is because your mind tells you. The only reason a putt for birdie is more important than that fourth putt for double is because your mind tells you.

A good PSR will get your body and mind synched up to swing the club. You need to convince your mind that it's no different than any other shot. Why is there no pressure on the range? Because there's nothing at risk. You need to hit the next shot with a carefully chosen target, but not caring about the outcome.

All this to answer the OP question: Slow play shouldn't be a deterrent. You're on the golf course, swinging a club, enjoying your friends and the scenery. You're not down a mine, you're not fighting a war, you're not cleaning toilets...

It's the uncontrolled emotion that killed your round - not the slow play. Think back to your self talk as you waited - and the chatter amongst your group. I highly doubt that any of it was positive.

Carry on Slats - this is a game that can never be won, only played. There's something to learn every round.

Strangely enough this works for me - but by "de-focusing".

Following advice on here following a similar problem I take a spare ball and toss it up / catch it much like an off spinner waiting to bowl - just distracts me enough until I'm ready to play my shot.

Whether its "juggling" or something else I think the trick is to turn off.

                  Oh dear.

We had a 4-ball of distinctly average players on Friday and we went round in easily under 4 hours.

That said though, at that rate, your old fellows would be round in 4 1/2 hours which these days is apparently acceptable - even if not to me or thee.

At the risk of being controversial, I think that the USA is generally an influence for good - think color (sic) TV, dishwashers, electric toothbrushes, and the euphemistically named "feminine hygiene products", however the concept that you need to set aside 5 hours of your life to play a round of golf is one that could easily have stayed on the other side of the Atlantic.

However it is here now and I guess we need to acquire a 4th skill to deal with it

4th skill more like a sniper rifle!
                    let me elaborate.
we followed the octogenarians (slowly)all the way to the 9th which is a call over hole, they duly acknowledged the rule and let us play our shots, all 3 of us hit the green with our tee shots and they putted out as we walked up to the green.
at this point the heavens opened and i was the only one on course not wearing waterproofs at this point i dashed to my car in the cark park and got a set of waterproofs and put them on and grabbed an umbrella too and then ran back to my playing partners.
this must have took 10 mins so imagine our surprise when we get to the 10th tee and they had not hit their drives!
                    now that is slow play!

                      ROFLMAO

But, there again - playing defence counsel - you can't actually say that they had held you up at that stage.

"Might as well have a drink now Jim, whilst the young un's gone for his Waterproofs"

Only joking Ian - slow play drives me nuts too - any way off to say something rude to the Dog - 80 gross indeed, thats him out of the high cap club

                          :P Yeah, but not on a par 72 (+8), on a par 66 (+14).

You wouldn't have been impressed with a gross 80 on my local crazy golf course, would you, me old mucker? It's all relative, I'm telling you!

just checked the medal results on the club website
missed out on the sub division win by 1 stoke and the overall win by 2!

shame about the 7 strokes lost on 10-13 waiting for the old giffers to stop farting around

i really will have to learn how to deal with ultra slow play
