  • Length of new driver.

A fluke accident damaged my Nickent driver ( regular flex, 9 degree loft ) before purchasing a new driver my swing speed was checked and it was recommended I should use a stiff shaft.
I opted for a TaylorMade " Burner " stiff shaft, 9.5 degree loft, a nice club, a wee bit lighter than my original driver and slightly longer. I'm certainly swinging it well, I've only missed three fairways in my first two rounds at my new club. No problem with distance the only thing I was a bit uncomfortable with was the length of the club.
Being 5'7" I felt that I had to stand a bit further away from the ball so I took an inch off the club. When I say that what I mean is that I choke down an inch on the grip which made a tremendous amount of difference in my feeling of comfort.
I'm not sure if I should actually take an inch off the shaft or should I leave it alone and continue choking down on it ? Any thoughts on this guys ?

    Hi

On the "if it aint broke don't fix it principle", if you are finding the fairway and getting distance then I'd just stick with what you are doing.

We did have a thread on this a while back though

    http://www.golf-tuition-online.com/g...ft-length.html

at the end of which, as you can see, I went out and had an inch taken off the shaft to go from 46" to 45".

A proper fitting would be best but failing that I'd certainly recommend shortening the shaft to anyone who is having problems with the driver - especially if you find your shorter shafted, more lofted woods giving you comparable (or better ) distance to the big stick.

For what it is worth I have heard, and read that alot of swing instructors think that leaving 1" of the butt end of the grip showing is a good thing. Some even advocate 1-1/2" showing is alright. This is done for more accuracy, and allows most high handicappers to square up the club easier at impact. Also has something to do with the club feeling more balanced in the swing. These measurements being from outside edge of the pinkie finger of the upper hand, to the butt end of the club. I grip down at least 1", or more myself depending on the shot distance required.

Like the man said, "if it's not broken, don't screw around with it". GJS

Don't change it, if you are hitting ok with the shorter grip down the shaft then stay with it, many pro's do that these day's, now you can be one too!

And the day you need to bust it over that bunker 300 yards away. tee it up higher and go with the full length
