Re: causes and cures for hitting it off the toe

    Hey man,

I hear you, it's the most frustrating thing. Make a good well balanced swing, nice little draw, and have it come up 25 yards short. Anyway, funny you should mention it, I only recently did I get it figured out. Actually I originally started this thread 2 years ago, and since then I've fixed it twice.

The first time I fixed it was by making sure I was swinging from the inside. The feeling was to get the shaft moving out, like I was trying to hit a push. That's what my instructor told me to do. Literally the instruction was: "On the way down, think about putting my right elbow (for a right handed golfer) in my right pocket". That fixed it for the remainder of the year and I hit the ball really solidly.

Then one day last year it came back. Just showed up. I was definitely swinging out, but this was the same problem with a different cause. I played out the season trying my old fix and hitting some good and some waaaayyy off the toe, to the point that I was surprised that I didn't miss the ball altogether.

After filming my swing this winter, I realized that the problem started with my backswing. I was taking it halfway back fine, but then getting really laid off and flat from midway to the top. This caused me to be automatically stuck on the way down and the only way to even make contact with the ball was to get my body way out of the way, stand up on the way down and flip my hands at the ball. I was spinning out and stuck underneath, so my old fix was no longer effective.

So, long story short, I've improved my backswing and my balance, and I've been working on the final step, which is to try to maintain some flex in my left knee at impact to slow my lower body down a little. I'll be honest, I've NEVER hit the ball as well as I am now. Solid, right out of the middle, any trajectory I want. Other than the fact that I'm having re-learn all my distances, it feels great!

Sorry for the long post. Let me know if you have any questions or want me to dive deeper. Also, jbrunk, BrianW and the rest of the posters here have tons of insight, perhaps they'll weigh in.

    Good luck man!

Re: causes and cures for hitting it off the toe

I am keeping an eye on this thread as well as I have gotten into hitting most all shots off of the toe and can't seem to get out of doing so.

Re: causes and cures for hitting it off the toe

Thanks Jbowden for your response. Wow, it really is amazing this game of golf isn't it. One golfers cause can be another ones cure! In reading your response it highlighted to me that one golfing problem can have its cause in so many different roots. What you described as your problem doesn't sound like mine, although I have a similar outcome if that makes any sense.

I have been really practising hard over the last week and I have discovered that coming into impact I believe I am coming out of my posture and 'standing up' through the hitting area. This has an effect of raising the angle of the shaft through the strike & giving me a 'toe - down' hit. In effect if the club comes into the ball toe down then it practically becomes impossible to hit the centre of the club face.

Now, as I have read in an earlier reply if the lie angle of my clubs was too shallow then this could also be the cause. But I do not believe this to be the case for me personally as my lies are already 2deg upright as I am quite a tall guy.

Being 6'5" I believe that I was keeping my legs too straight at address and bending over too much to reach the ball. When I looked at other tall pros like Ernie, Robert Karlsson & Chris Wood they all have a fairly upright spine angle & just flex their knees more for different length clubs.

Putting this into practice for me was very difficult but I have had a couple of practice sessions now where I have tried to emulate this and I have to say when I got into a groove I was striking the ball out of the centre & I felt alot more balanced through the swing.

I will continue to practice in this manner and hopefully I will now be hitting the ball with the part of the club with grooves on it!!

        Thanks

Re: causes and cures for hitting it off the toe

          Hey King,

Good luck with your posture. That was one of the areas I had to improve as well. Interestingly enough, I started out too upright with a lot of knee flex and had to concentrate on trying to get more bend from the waist and less knee flex. That went well and then I started hitting it off the toe and the rest is history. Whenever I start hitting it poorly again I always go back and check my set-up.

Anyway, aside from the obvious step of getting your lies checked maybe look into whether your shafts are correct for you? Just a thought.

Good luck man! Keep me posted on your progress!
