  • Hooking still

A while back I wrote to the forum about hooking the ball with my driver well nothing has changed. I am thinking maybe it is my shaft. When I had the Taylor Made (R7 460) stock shaft I would slice the ball quite a bit.
Now with my Adilla shaft which is heavier I seem to be hooking the ball (both shaft are stiff). I was wondering if this might make any sense and do I need to get myself a lesson and refitted for my driver.
    Thanks

You need to fix your club path. Hooks are caused by an extreme inside out club path combined with a clubface that is too closed at impact. Fix the club path first IMO.

Can you post a video of your swing?

      Re: Hooking still

      1) Weaken your grip a little.

      2) Have your shoulders a little more open to target.

      3) Feel as if you are doing a Karate chop with the bottom edge of your right hand as you come into impact. This will delay the closing of your clubface.

        Brain & Jbrunk
One think I did notice was that my right arm (bicep & forearm) are the only parts that are very sore from swinging. Maybe to much right arm is causing the hooking problem.

Not sure about the soreness, but you need to feel like the club stays in front of you more than it does now and you need to swing left after impact. If you are too inside (which is what it sounds like), try holding your hands high into the backswing and as long as possible into the downswing. This will help keep the club "in front of you" and keep it from dropping inside (behind you) as you make your transition.

To expand on Brian's idea of weakening your grip: I prefer a nuetral grip to begin with. Maybe you need to experiment with that. My grip is slightly weaker than neutral because I like a perfectly flat left wrist at impact.

            Re: Hooking still

You're coming into the ball with the toe of the club closing.
You still might be coming ott...anyway the right forearm is
coming in above the left...crossing over one another.
Could be stalling the left hip.. forcing the right arm(hand)
to square the face. Or the arms being blocked by the right
hip forcing the arms(hand) to square the face.

One of you're problems may also be in this video.

It's a brutal affliction dant, I feel your frustration, I've been fighting ( and trying to fix ) hooking the driver for the longest time. Five lessons from five different teaching pros. last season and I ended up with five different opinions. I recently changed drivers going from a regular shaft to a stiff shaft but I was not under the illusion that this was the cure. It's in the swing not the shaft, for me it's feast or famine, I either " nail it " down the fairway on a regular basis or hook it off the first tee and it's there for most of my round.
The video reply is very interesting, I studied it a number of times and took something from it that I will apply at the practice range today. Play this video a number of times and see if you can find anything that may relate to your situation. I certainly wish you luck, it's a frustrating problem indeed, my course is playing long and difficult at this time and I shot a brilliant 76 yesterday and only hit four fairways. It was a day where I hit great golf shots ( driving excluded ) putted well and a short game that boggled the eyes of my playing partners. I can only imagine the outcome if the driver had been working, hang in there, let me know if this video helped you or not. Buteman.

Of all of the three I think it has to do with me using to much of my right side and maybe decelarating which I find kind of hard to believe the way I swing. I guess I will have to see what I come up with using everyone suggestions.
                Thanks

I find it unbelievable that no where in that video does he mention the path. Just unreal.

                    Re: Hooking still

Its funny but the only club I hook is my driver all the other clubs I either hit straight, a nice fade or slice. Go figure.

Yeah but now you know why a hooker is called hooker!

                      Golf lessons are great!

I would start with practicing aiming the club face square before moving on to swing paths.
