  • Over the Top

Well its winter here in Canada and I'm still trying to keep my golf skills (which I seem to be losing). As I swing in the snow I notice that my "snow divot" is pointing way left, if Im not mistaken that means Im coming over the top?

My question is how do you cure the over the top move? I would also like to know what is the usual result of over the top? Eg: slice, hook etc...

    Hi Chris

If you're a right-handed person and the divot, from behind the ball, is pointing to the left, you're are swinging over the shoulders on an in to out path. This will result in a slice.

Try to turn your legs to face the target whilst leaving your shoulders in position at the top of the backswing. You should feel your right shoulder drop way down inside, but don't try consiously to do this.

To practice swing to the top and stop. Let a friend grab the club to stop it from moving. Then turn your legs to the target.

Surely its an OUT to IN path that produces left oriented divots and a slice.

Golly, you're right Ian ... see what happens if you rush a post before work. Still, I think it's a good tip to get the feel of the swing from the top. I see lots of high handicappers keeping their right shoulder too high in the through swing.
