  • Follow up to " he was full of it ".

Hello again, I thought for those of you who read and commented on my previous thread you may be interested in the lesson I had with the head pro. I was highly encouraged with his initial comment which was, " to fix a swing flaw we need a dedicated teacher and a dedicated pupil ". Good start, he checked me out from all angles at address, he liked my grip, stance and posture.
Warming up by hitting a few wedges then mid irons, his comment was " certainly no problems there " out came the driver, it's a new club ( Taylor-Made " Burner " stiff shaft, 9.5 degree ). The first four balls, three hooked, one straight, he had me hit another four, all hooked. We stopped there and had a chat, he told me that he knew the reason why I hooked my tee shots and the solution was simple.
He said that on all my warm up shots I completed my backswing and made an excellent transition. When using the driver and hitting hooks the cause was on the takeaway, I was pulling the club way too far inside, I was not completing the backswing and the initial move down was being started by throwing my right shoulder out. " So let's fix this together " he said, a good extension low, away from the ball with the back of my left hand and complete the backswing. As the left shoulder turns under my chin on the backswing so shall the right shoulder turn under my chin on the downswing. Okay that was it, brilliant results indeed, he made it perfectly clear that he was leaving me with plenty to work with and that it won't be the last time I hit a hook but when I do I will know how to fix it.
I spent another hour by myself on the practice range hitting solid drives with a hint of a draw. He spent forty five minutes with me and mentioned that I should watch Mr. Woods on tape studying his takeaway and by the way folks his fee was $ 0.00, a nice chap who really was interested in helping me.

At least you didn't have to pay for it.

There's no substitution for a good coach.

Too bad mine charges me and lives in Florida. LOL

Good catch by the instructor. That is one of the problems that creeps into my driver swing and it really plays havoc. I figured that out three rounds ago and my driving has greatly improved.

We can learn from that--- a smooth transition is important. That's why I should avoid rushing the backswing...
