  • Pulling with my irons

I am entering my thrid year trying this game. I was using all arms and no turn in my hips and shoulders. It was all arms. I took a few lessons and learned of the proper rotation of the hips and shoulders, etc. and my driving has improved significantly. Now I drive it straight and fairly far, never slicing and rarely fading. But with my irons, I now seem to pull the ball or duck hook. Perhaps I am concentrating on my release too much or not concentrating on other things. What was once a nice shot swung incorrectly, now is no longer accurate. Help please?

You are probably coming over the top because youre not turning your shoulders right. Funnily enough you can get away with this more with the driver for some reason (I know as I used to !)

Think of the backswing as 2 parts.

First. Set the club with a one piece takeaway. Or try Joe Dantes magic move which is also good. Either way the club will be parallel to the ground, shaft to your target line and the clubhead not inside your hands

Second. The bit thats the struggle. From here you need to turn your shoulders to complete the BS. Dont lift with your hands, wrists etc. BUT (a big but) do not turn your shoulders level else that will fling the club behind you and mean you have to loop it OTT coming down. Try and feel the right shoulder work up so that the left shoulder comes under your chin. Now you are turning the shoulders parallel with the spine angle. When my pro sorted me out on this a few years ago his advice was to imagine a pole sticking out of my chest. At the top of the BS that pole should point up and behind not just behind. Will feel odd but try it

I believe I can explain that . Your rotation can pull your back foot off the ground before impact. If your rear foot is pulled off the ground it can cause your body to shift left of target (following the pull of your unwinding hips) and your downswing path could then be redirected to the left. If you focus on keeping your right foot grounded a little longer during the downswing (while your body unwinds) you should find your path isn't altered and your shots staying more in line with your target.

Looks at the position of the pros below at impact. Their back feet are still pretty close to the ground.

Great point, can also be avoided by widening the stance a little so your not throwing the lower body about and giving yourself a good balance on the way down ( see pivot drills thread)

              Good advice Avid.

I like to let my trail foot roll in at the ankle like Jack Nicklaus.
