  • New member.....long irons

Just a quick note to say hi....found this site looking for tips on hitting better long irons. A quick summary on my problem or opportunity as I like to say. I hit my short irons SW-6 pretty well and ironicly I'd say I'm a decent driver as well with a 10 handicap but I am very inconsistent with my long irons. I find I hit them better swinging more around my body (I'm 6'3") but I've always read that you should swing all clubs the same to be consistant. In other words you should have ONE swing but when I try to stick to that I can't get good results with long irons. Is it a myth? Should my swing be different for long irons? Help! Looking forward to hearing back.

What specifically do you mean when you say you swing around your body. You may be swinging correctly if you are getting into the position(s) shown in the pictures linked below:

Can you tell us what problems you have with ball flight when using long irons.

The swing should be similar with all clubs but the swing plane will differ as should ball position. Longer clubs will require a shallower swing plane and the ball should be positioned more forward in your stance, the club should strike the ball with a shallower angle of attack than mid or short irons but should still use a slightly downward blow. The swing should also use the same tempo as your shorter irons, imagine a 3 iron has a "7" stamped on it when you consider swing speed.

A video or some detail on the problems you are having helps a lot, but in the mean time:

Make sure you have a flat left wrist/cupped right wrist at impact (your hands should be ahead of the ball), with a slightly open to square clubface with your axis tilting away from the target and your head behind the ball.
This pretty much goes for EVERY club in the bag, but with longer irons we all have a tendency to swing em harder and get a little flippy at the bottom.

Also make sure you keep pivotting all the way.
